DR's & Daily Driving

I'm just wondering for those of you that use DR's for daily driving how do you like it? Just as good of grip as regular tires? How are they in the rain?

My thing is I'm getting new rims/tires for the goat. I can either put DR's on the back of the new rims. Or I got a bud with some stock 17's off his goat I can mount some BFG DR's on. Of course that will end up costing me $350-400 more.

So my options are BFG KDW's all around (235/40/18 front & 265/35/18 rear), and then put some BFG DR's on my buddies stockers he will give me. Or do the BFG KDW's on the front with the BFG DR's on the rear for DD. I understand Nitto 555 DR's are pretty good for DD, but they will not hook as good as the BFG DR's and I need all the grip I can get at the track.

Re: DR's & Daily Driving

i ran dr back in high school daily. Hook 40 times better than street tires. you will destroy people out of the hole. got decent life out of them considering i was racing all the time.

Bad points:
1. broke 2 rear ends.
2. YOU ARE GOING TO DIE IF IT RAINS...This is not a joke. my car would go sideways out of nowhere. not even goosing the gas or anything. DO NOT under any circumstances get on the highway if you have dr's when raining. i have almost killed myself going 40 in the rain with them 65 or 70 look for a casket.
3. you will want to race...and you will get tickets

have fun

3600 stall w/ drag radials at the track..... not gonna hook too well.

Get regular BFG KDWS tires for DD and a set of 16 inch wheels w/ MT Et Streets or Drags for the track.

I've decided to do the KDW's for daily, and a set of BFG DR's on 17's I'm getting from my bud at the track.

Re: DR's & Daily Driving

I have the nitto drs in the back and have had no problem inthe rain. Not saying it isn't more dangerous then regular radials, but I haven't had an issue so far.

Only problem I have is that they pick up EVERY SINGLE DAMN ROCK on the road. Go through a patch of road with a bit of gravel and you'll hear it being thrown around your wheel well for a few minutes. It has torn up my gfx right past the rear wheel pretty bad. Lot of paint chips. Nothing on the fender though.

17s are alright with DRs but u should look for maybe a 16 inch tire, for the bigger sidewall , they will ultimatley hook better than the 17s

Re: DR's & Daily Driving

I had Nitto 555's until I ran them bald. I then switched to BFG KDWS tires in the rear because I thought I was taking my car to Germany with me. (These are a mud and snow tire).

From the day I put the NITTO's on the back, I cannot imagine having a better tire. I absolutely loved them in the rain or even snow. I seriously don't feel the M&S tires have any more traction in the rain or snow than my NITTO's did.

The only downfall is that they will not last long at all. Plan on getting 2 new rear tires every year....if you daily drive it. IMO that is the only trade-off.

Re: DR's & Daily Driving

I have BFG KD on the rear of mine and it is daily driven (at least 50 miles daily on week days) and then some. The tires will have been on the car 11 months and they are at least at 75% tread depth. They have done fine in the rain too...not that we've had much lately.

Re: DR's & Daily Driving

I have 255 50 16 M/T DRs and a 3600 stall and 1.55 60's. I'd say that pretty good for a car with both sway bars and stock shocks/springs. The hot ticket for the new GTO is 16x8 5 star stock Firebird wheels and the 255 50 R16 M/T Radials...They fit well and hook great. There's a guy on the EFA Forum (screen name Jizz) who uses that set up and he hooks well...I would definitely opt for the 16" tire over the 17" That little bit more sidewall makes a huge difference...
