Lost title... How hard to get new one in Tx?

Theres a solid mid 70's to early 80's Z28 near me (Looks like the one on Fast Times At Ridgemont High). Anyways Ive got a 454 and TH400 combo sitting here that begging me to throw it in somthing and that Z looks about perfect. No engine or trans. Talked to the guy that owns the Z and he says it has no title. How hard is it to get a title for it in Texas? I am originally from Michigan and from what I remember it took along time. Is a bill of sale all I need? Cost?

Just looking for help from somone who has done it before. I can probebly score that Z for cheap, just want to know if its worth it.

Thanks!

Jeff

http://www.dot.state.tx.us/vtr/vtrreginfo.htm?pg=faq

About 1/2 way down the page ...

Question: I lost my title. How do I get a duplicate?
Answer: Applicants for a certified copy of title may be the owner of record, lienholder, or verifiable agent of either. Whether the application is submitted by mail or walk-in, all applicants must provide to the department:
A properly completed Application for Certified Copy of Title (Form VTR-34)*, which is available at all VTR Regional Offices, County Tax Assessor-Collectors’ Offices, and on VTR’s Fax on Demand at 1-888-232-7033 or this web site.
The appropriate fee - $2.00 for mail-in applications and $5.45 for walk-in applications. (If mailed, the fee should be in the form of a check, cashier’s check, or money order made payable to the Texas Department of Transportation.) Please do not mail cash.
Photo ID (government-issued photo ID, such as Texas or other state driver’s license, government identification card, U.S. Passport, or military identification) of the person signing the Form VTR-34*. (In cases of joint ownership, government-issued photo ID for each individual owner of record is required.)
If mailing by overnight or express mail through a mail service which requires a physical address, mail to the VTR Regional Office nearest you, using the appropriate street address on the back of the Form VTR-34*.

Verifiable Agent of Owner or Lienholder (Mail-in or Walk-in)

In addition to the requirements above, a verified agent of the owner or lienholder must also provide a letter of signature authority on original letterhead, a business card, or copy of the agent’s employee ID.

If the Form VTR-34 is signed with a Power of Attorney (POA), the transaction must have, in addition to the requirements above:

Copy of a government-issued photo ID of recorded owner/lienholder signing the POA.
Copy of a government-issued photo ID of the individual signing the Form VTR-34*.

NOTE: Businesses given POA will also be required to provide a letter of signature authority on original letterhead, or a business card, or a copy of employee ID.

In cases of joint ownership, each owner must sign the POA and provide a copy of each owner’s government-issued photo ID.

For more information, see the Certified Copy of Title Fact Sheet (Form VTR-34-F)* available at all VTR Regional Offices, County Tax Assessor-Collectors’ Offices, and on this web site.

You might also check/search in the LOUNGE..... There was someone running free Carfax info..... That way you will know when and where it was registered, plus possible history info..

Re: Lost title... How hard to get new one in Tx?

Hey Jeff, I'm doing the same thing with my 81 Firebird. Last time I checked all I had to do was go down and fill out some paperwork and pay a fee, like mitchntx said, but I haven't yet. I'm waiting on the divorce to be final before I get the title so the ex won't try and take it (she's evil like that, she's the reason I had to get rid of the 93). Anywho, if it works out let me know, I'm home for most of the weekends to be with my daughter and wouldn't mind lending a wrench on the old Z!

Damn Matt, I thought things were going good for you to. I hate to hear that. Well the deal fell through with the Z, the guy wont sell it. Oh well. Let me know if you guys find a 70's camaro around for CHEAP.

Going to Oklahoma this weekend to pick up a built tranny for the mini van, grenaded the last one, couldnt handle 20 PSI. I hope to be terrorizing Killeen this weekend. I also got a monster front mount I need to put on.

I will let you know Tex if I need a hand, need to find a old Z first

Thanks,
Jeff

Well, she thinks the grass is greener with an ex-best friend of mine and lots of pot. She's a b!tch.... First chance I get, I'm getting my daughter back. Anywho, I found this Camaro for sale in Oklahoma for $500. Looks pretty clean;
