attn: domestic violence

i have a cop question for ya. a doctor friend of mine doesnt want to get the K4 radar detector. i think its called K4. well anyway, its because its a radar and laser blocker that is invisible to cops. it is installed into the car proffesionally. the radar are on the front and back liscense plates and the leds are installed next to the speedometer and tachometer. is this illegal in texas? they sell them at customsounds- the most respected highest priced car crap place there is in san antonio. they told him they did not know if it was illegal or not. i know a respected company would not knowingly sell illegal items. can you help us out.

K4 may be the name of a specific brand or model of radar detector, but I can tell you that K4 is one of the bands that the Police used to use. Not sure which municipalities use what, but the new hot thing out now is the laser detectors.

About 90% of all radar detectors are just that, detectors, in of themselves in Texas they are legal. The small minority of devices that can hinder the ability of a radar gun to detect your speed are illegal.
Its illegal for the fact that you are trying to prevent the police from catching you doing something wrong. Your friend is welcome to buy and own one, but it would be illegal to install and run. Having said that, you would either be faced with an Officer who knows which model/brands do what, or Police can also have a device to monitor if you are using a radar detector...a radar detector detector. And by those two methods if caught, you would be in trouble.

You really don't need one of those anyway. If you purchase a quality detector, such as the Valentine you should be okay. But with that also comes the notion that you have to use them correctly. They don't simply keep you out of tickets...just speed traps.

Now a radar jammer will certainly help to prevent most police from obtaining a reading, but if you are caught, you be in trouble!

My advice is to follow the posted limit within reason, until you come to an open road with a long line of sight.

But are we talking about not getting picked up for a simple infraction of 5 MPH over the limit, or does your friend have plans to inact the straightaway of LeMans??? And push the upper side of triple digit speeds?
For the latter, neither a radar detector or jammer are going to help or save you.
But from being picked up in a speed trap for going 5 over the limit, a radar jammer is a tad overkill.

Funny I found this.. I am currently looking for a radar detector and have no clue as to what to get. Our price range is up to 150.00 What's good and what's trash? CS is Circuit City? Like he said above, I don't plan on running the Le Mans around 1604 but we take a lot of road trips and the extra insurance would be nice. Don't forget to post where to get it at please.. Thanks,

why doesn't he save the money from a radar detector and take up road racing? i had a lot of fun doing that and getting into triple digits is easy in the straights. driving on an open road is nothing after you've really pushed yourself on a closed course. and the good thing is if you wreck or run off course, there isn't any real significant damage.

that or he could come fill in for me at work.

I would like to point out that laser jammers are legal in Texas, but "Radar" jammers are highly illegal with up to a 75,000 dollar fine and 10 years in prision...it is also a felony. Here is the exact laws on laser jamming.

"There are no federal prohibitions of laser jammers, as laser is controlled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under CFR 21, subpart 1040, 1041 for eye safety."

"Three states have banned ownership, sale and use of laser jammers. These states are Minnesota (Minnesota Statutes 2002, 169.14) California (Sec. 1, Ch 493.28150, effective January 1999) and Utah (C. 41-6-52.7, 1998)"

I would also like to point out that products sold from Rocky Mountain "pasive radar jammers" are all scams and have 0 effect on police radar and lasers. "Active" laser jammers sold from Blinder, Escourt, and Bel work very well. Although if you have a dark colored TA like black with out a front license plate and your head lights down it cuts down on all reflective surfaces and the cop cant get a reading until your about 50 feet a way anyway (laser jammers only block down to like 200 feet at most) so you may not even need one.

Also having jsut a detector that cant detect lasers is pointless...on all tests they could not detect laser when it was pointed at the front license plate (target of choice ) at all, and could only detect it when it was poi9nted directly at the unit...sense cops dont point it at wind sheilds because it goes right thru this is rather pointless. Although, if you egt a laser jammign kit to go with your radar detector (like I have a Bel RX65 PRo witht he jamming kit) it extends your range by 300% for radar and gives you front laser detection as well as jamming so you can tell your being hit and slow down.
