what is normal oil pressure for our 6s?

I have a 94 v6. what is normal oil pressure? im reading ~40 on the gage, to about 20-25 during highway use, and around 5 idling (which sounds about right).

around 5psi or 50 damn thats low i would get that checked with a oil pressure gauge at a shop unless it is 50

mine never goes below 40 and stays at about 75 when cooler and 65 when warm

get it checked now!!!

even on old cars the rule of thumb is atleast 10 psi for every 1thousand rpm

Replace your oil pressure sensor...

Mine was readding real low, busted and I was losing a quart of oil every 70 miles...

I replaced it and my pressure doubled.

At cold start up I am near 75psi, once car warms up I am around 50-60psi.

So out of the gauge's maximum of 80 PSI, you are reading 75-78 PSI? That is high as hell.

When the car is cold, I read somewhere between 50-60ish. Normal highway cruising I am at 40 PSI. When it gets hot, that is when the pressure drops. I am around 5 at idle, after driving around for a while.

When it gets really hot, and chilling in traffic, my pressure goes to maybe 25 psi at the lowest at idle.

Isn't 5psi in the red?

You guys have some serious changes in pressure in your cars. Mine does not move like that and never goes anywhere near 80 psi and never lower than just below the center mark. We must consider that GM's gauges arent exactly meant to be the most precious gauges.

Well mine is somwwhat new so i kinda trust it.

it shoudl move, oul pressure goes up when the revs go up. Also is affectd by how hot or cold it is.

either way under 20 psi I think your sending unit is bad or your car has issues, most likely the sending unit.

This topic has been brought up a few times on this board and others. Having owned a 3.1L and a 3.4L, I can vouch for low oil pressure readings. I don't remember the numbers exactly, but when the car was warm, it would hover around 1/4, and when cold it would be around 1/2. I used 10w-30 oil too.

The 3.1L never burned or leaked in the 170,000 miles it was alive. The 3.4 was still running very strong when I sold it at 70,000 and it didn't leak or burn either.

Just as long as it doesn't go into the red!

Yup. It never drops below 37 PSI. Even when the car is hot it still holds steady at 65-70 PSI. 42 PSI in park.
