Transmission Swappage (due to slippage)
Transmission Swappage (due to slippage)
I'm curious, My 96' v6 has the factory A.T. I was wondering, if I had a 3800, 5 sp. to salvage parts from, what would I need to pull to put the 5sp im mine. Obviously the transmission, flywheel/clutch parts...and pedals, clutch master cylinder, and shifter. I'm wondrering about crossmembers, driveshaft, electronic components, speed sensors and such. Anyone done this on a v6? Should I just buy the whole vehicle from the salvage yard. The junk camaro isn't repairable, (not cost effectively at least) severe rear end damage. But the front end from the rear pillars foreward is fine.
Re: Transmission Swappage (due to slippage)
Besides the transmission and the clutch, you will need to either "alter" your wiring harness and PCM, or take it out of the wrecked car (best choice). I believe the crossmember is different, but bolts up in the same location (no biggie). The driveshaft mates up with both transmissions. In fact I have a driveshaft off of an LS1 car on my V6, as I'm not a fan of the 2 piece and I'm building an LT1 to swap out. Good luck trying to buy a whole car from a salvage yard. As soon as you say that, they don't want to hear anything else you have to say. I tried every salvage yard in NJ. Anyway, you'll need the trans, clutch assmbly, pedals, PCM, wiring harness and crossmember, shifter, and the plate in the console as well as the rubber boot underneath it. Your are going to have to make some room for the shifter in the sheet metal too. Have fun.
Re: Transmission Swappage (due to slippage)
Ok, thanks for the advice. However, if I change the PCM and harness, will I need to change the ignition switch? Mine has the coded key. I knew about the console cover, which I'll be fabricating instead of the factory cover. I figured I'd have to poen up the hole on top of the tunnel
Re: Transmission Swappage (due to slippage)
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the key is ignition specific, not PCM. There are 4 (I believe, its been a year since I did this last) connectors that go under the dash on the passenger side. The dash harness is the same if you use the same year for the swap. As for opening up the tunnel, yea there will be a little cutting required.
