Exclamation Thump!!

Cruizn down the road driving pretty slow, or even from a dead start off, my car makes a thumping noice when i put my foot in it? It sounds like its coming from around the air filter. It has done this since o bought it. ITs not hurting anything i don think, its jsut real sluggish sorta then you hear the thump and it takes off? ANy ideas on what this could be??

If you wouldn't have said that, I would've suggested checking your tranny mount...

But if it really comes from the front, then it might be some loose suspension parts. Shock, maybe?

Definetely something you might want to check out soon, though.

sure its coming from the front end?

Quick way to test your tranny mount since you have a 5-speed, put it in 1st, get up ro like 15mph, ride it down(foot off the gas, car in gear, clutch engaged), then while holding the shifter, floor it, if the shifter jumps up more then an in. like 2 in. then you need a new tranny mount.

if its hesitating before it "thumps" then it might be an ignition problem. does the "thump" sound like a back fire maybe?

could be any number of things. most likely things: plug wires (check first), plugs, coils.

if the shielding on one or more of the wires is less than perfect it could be arcing. in fact the ignition system is so powerful (lots of amps) it could be arcing at the plug boot, right before it gets to the plug.

so I'd say check the wires first, then plugs, or just replace both if you haven't done it recently or ever.

Lightbulb

My Z28 did the same thing when I was in texas.
I would floor it from a lower speed, it would bog for a second or 2 then pop usaly only once then take off.
2 things caused it...
1, $#!ty gas was the main cause.
2, timing
I ran the good gas and fuel system cleaner and that fixed it.

my car did that aswell, i didnt know what it was one day i popped the hood and revved the car ub by moving the tps, and it backfired thru the intake valves and scared the hell out of me.

i forget what it was exactly, but i do know at about the same time my mechanic said i had a huge timing problem that he fixed. (caused by deaership leaving distrubiter and rotor bolts out) it was firing the plugs when the intake valves were still open.

as for the hesitation, check plug wires, plugs, cap rotor, coils, could cause a misfire, has your SES light come on?
pull your plugs and check the condition, if they are discoloured you could be running lean or rich, if your running rich for too long you will do alot of damage (and i know) it happened to me, killed my o2 sensor, my plug wires from the heat, my exhaust turned blue and warped making an exhaust leak.... could kill your cat aswell.

the camaro 3.8 has a recall on the plug wires, you can check for recalls here on your car

http://www.alldata.com/recall/make/

ill post more if i remember anything about fixing the problem
or if i find some more info

in the meatime do a search on misfire backfire or hesitation
