Synthetic vs REg Oil
Synthetic vs REg Oil
hello i justed wanted to know what the advantages were on syn versus reg motor oil...thx...also am looking to install a 160 thermo on my 95 3.4 camaro..someone advised me to to flush the radiator while am at it...however he said to also just use radiator fluid as oppose to the 50/50 mixture recommended by gm...whats ur take on this..also i live here in miami, fl, dont know if that matters..
Do a search on the internet about the regular vs. synthetic debate.
As for the coolant, do NOT run straight coolant. Your coolant needs the 50/50 water mix to work properly. Water is actually better than coolant...you do need the coolant though for the corossion additives. Since you live in Miami, I would run just water with Water Wetter (Water Wetter has additives). Maybe 10% coolant...maybe.
I run water & Water Wetter here in California.

NEVER run straight coolant!!
up here in PA it is necessary to run a 50/50 mix for the cold months, but down in FL very little coolant is actually needed... just gotta make sure you have some sort of coolant though for the additives, such as Water Wetter as ImportKILLER had explained.

Synthetic oil is better for your engine. I don't know if there is any hp gain from using it, but on horsepower TV they took a SS and switched out all the stock fluids with mobile one fluids and gained a few hp.
I am not too sure if it makes a difference but all i do know is that Synthetic is better for higher temps. I am living in Phx and i've noticed that the regular oil causes the oil pressure gauge to move around a lot and with the synthetic it usually stays in one area if it moves its when your accelerating. The regular would start moving around while the care was idle. But the car seems to ride smoother with the synthetic or atleast thats my opinion about it.
You two I would def. recommend synthetic oil to. Miami and Phoenix, two hot locations...for sure synthetic. Or any place that it gets really cold (snows) I would use synthetic. Here in the Bay Area, it doesn't get hot or cold enough to really warrant synthetics but I use it for the added protection and mostly for the longer drain intervals.
Any gain in power, if any, would be so small you wouldn't be able to feel it.

Synthetics are far superior to standard oils. For example, Hot Rod did a test and took a Mailbu that they swapped an LT1 into and went from regular oil to full synthetic (engine, tranny, rear) and gained 10 hp!!
