Is Synthetic Oil OK in the winter time?
Hello all. It is I, the girl who knows little about cars and only comes around here when I have a question.
*flips hair and bats eyes and hopes not to be flamed*
I have been using Castrol Syntec in my '94 88k Camaro since April. So far, it's great. No leaks. *knock on wood*
The last oil change was early September, so it's soon time for another. Should I keep with the Synthetic, or is regular oil best for these cold cold winter days?
If it matters, I don't drive my baby much in the winter on these icy roads. We all know Camaros handle like tobaggans and I don't want to risk a crash. Sometimes he sits for 2 or 3 weeks in a row without so much as a start up. (Maybe I should sit in him and let the engine run every 2 weeks or so, even if we don't go anywhere??)
Thanks for any and all advice!

Synthetic is even better and more beneficial in cold weather! Synthetics flow much easier and quicker at the lower temps than regular oil does which is critical on your engine at start up...especially ESPECIALLY in the cold.
If you can't drive the car long enough to get the temp gauge up to normal operating temps, don't even bother starting it. Just starting it and letting it run for a few minutes just sitting then turning it off is bad. Better to just let it sit.
Sounds like you live where it snows so synthetic would be a good choice for you and it would probably be even better for you to us 5W-30 if you aren't doing so already. Try a different brand though...for roughly the same price, you can get Mobil 1 which is far superior.

Thanks guys! This is all good to know.
So I guess I'll just let my car sit until all this snow melts off the roads and then get a change with Mobil 1.
Is there a Mobil 1 that is synthetic and then a Mobil 1 that is not?
Thanks again!

Mobil Oil Corp calls all of there sythetic oils Mobil 1. The conventional oil they sell is just called Mobil. Then there I believe there is something called drive-clean which is 50% synthetic 50% conventional.
