Swapping a v6 to a v8
Swapping a v6 to a v8
what would I need? besides the engine of course. Basically... would it be cheaper just to buy an ss/z28 or would it be cheaper to swap the v8 in... (i can do all the labor myself) I know I'll need an engine, and a tranny( i found that the 5.1 also has a 4spd auto.. does this mean i DONT need a new tranny?) anything else? thanks guys
Re: Swapping a v6 to a v8
What engine are you planning on using? Do you mean the 5.7?
Well here's the deal, if you do all of it yourself, it may be cheaper, but not easy. You will have to be VERY familiar with engines to do this yourself.
I hear v6/v8 trannys are the same in f-bodies (from 93-97 years, from what I know). 4L60E, I think.
What do you need besides the engine? Everything. The correct wires, fuel lines, every component you have in your v6, has a v8 equivelant and must be used, not to mention figuring out how to hook it all up in the engine bay that wasn't designed to hold whatever engine you are putting it in.
some links to help you.

But don't take me as a knowledgable person, this is just from what I've read. I'm still a noob, there will be plenty others to contribute and will dissuade you from doing it. But personally, I kinda hope you do and shove it in their faces.
Good luck.

Re: Swapping a v6 to a v8
A couple of people I knew that did the swap purchased wrecked LT1 donor cars and basically swapped everything from one car to another. Also, I don't believe your v6 4l60-E will work as the bellhousing bolt pattern is different from the LT1.

Your going to need the V8 Engine cradle(K-Member) wiring harness, transmission, driveshaft, rad hoses,V8 Radiator, and a posi rear would be a nice upgrade at this time.
