Stock 3.4L Y-pipe double-walled? rattling...
Hey,
I've got a question. My 1994 3.4L V6 Camaro has the stock exhaust except for the catalytic converter. I've had an annoying rattle somewhere in the exhaust that I could never find in the last year or so and today when changing the oil I decided to beat around on the exhaust pipes under there with my fist really hard, again, to see if I could find it. Well I think I have and when I beat on the Y-pipe close to the oil drain plug, the inside of the pipe where it runs right under the oil pan rattles. Almost like it's a pipe within a pipe and the inside pipe is loose. And along the pipe are these dimples where it would look almost crimp another pipe inside. Anyway it only rattles while taking off and under acceleration--when there's a strain on the engine.
At least I found it, but I'm just wondering if there's a way to correct this. The rattle is definitely down there in that part of the pipe and not rattling up where it connects to the manifold. I ran my hand all along the pipes headed to the manifold while beating on the Y-pipe. There's a definite rattle coming from inside the Y-pipe where it passes under the oil pan headed to the driver's side. There isn't a rock or anything wedged up there either.
Anywho, I'm sure it's nothing major but it's just annoyed me over the last few months and was wondering if there's any easy way to fix it without doing anything major. I'm going to be getting a new car in the next couple of months and will probably be selling the Camaro, so I don't want to put a lot into it. It runs great otherwise. I just don't want the embarassing rattle when someone's wanting to buy it because it's a great car.
Let me know if any of you have experienced this. I really don't want to go replacing it if I'm getting rid of the car in January. It's just annoying, and embarassing when pulling into a parking spot at night.
Thanks... sorry for the lengthy post.
Brian

Re: Stock 3.4L Y-pipe double-walled? rattling...
I had the same problem with mine. Had to replace the y-pipe replaced at my exhaust shop I also slaping in a new cat while they were doing that since the old one was starting to rattle a lil bit. But if you are gonna be getting rid of the car with in a few months I wouldn't really worry about it unless the y-pipe completely breaks or gets a hole in it some how.
Re: Stock 3.4L Y-pipe double-walled? rattling...
same exact problem w/ my y-pipe. the y-pipe is double walled and there are little divets in the pipe where they are tach-welded together. I took my car up to my local exhaust shop where i get all my work done and he just tach-welded it back together for me for free. hell of a lot cheaper than a new y-pipe and works just as well. l8tr
