Question Is the 3.4 really that slow?

I really want a Z, however I only have enough cash for a base model. If I add exhaust, air intake, and 3.42(or 3.73), wil the car move or will it be really slow? I'm not looking to race, just to use as a DD and to have a little more power.

What year of the 4th Gen are you looking to get? Of course if you go '93-'95 then you'll snag a 3.4 but if you look around for a cheap '96-'97 you can play with the 3.8. Unless of course you happen upon one of the '95 Cali models w/ the 3.8

You could always try to find a '96 w/ the 3.8 and approx. 40more HP. That'd help you out some there, then go with the intake/exhaust. What type of tranny are you looking to get with it? If an A4 then pop a shift kit in and 3.42's in the rear. If you go w/ the M5 then you'd probably be happy w/ 3.73's instead since you said you'd want to keep it as a DD. Then again a person's tolerance for a DD are different I myself wouldn't mind riding in an LT1 w/ a monster cam/huge stall/4.10's daily since I only have a 5 mile round trip from work and back *see what I mean?*

I'm looking for a 94 V6 A4. Let me run this by ya. My mom drive a 95 Lumina 3100 w/ 171K(and counting). 160HP & 185Ftlbs torque. FInal drive is 3.33. I think her car runs pretty strong. Maybe it's just because I usually drive a 105HP car, but let's not bring that up. Given my situation, do you thing the V6 with some mods would be powerful enough for me? FYI, I drive 260 mi a week. 70% Hiway. Bottom line is that I really need a car now, and I would hate to have to wait around 2 or 3 months!

Slow is a very relative term.
if you get a stock 3.4 - yes you will toasted by the big Mustang GTs, Z28s and TAs/. But you will have the power that will satisfy your urges at least for now.

I'll let you in on a secret. Even some of the guys with 500hp cars dream of more power. It's just the way it is. When I first got my 3.4 I thought it was plenty fast. Fast forward 2 years, and you find me with a 2 page mods list and still wanting more LOL

I say take one out for a test drive and see how you feel. There's nothing wrong with driving a V6, it's a car, it's YOUR car and if you are happy that's what's important.

Unless you stickercharge it, then we will have to give you a wedgie

Would I be able to spin the tires a little w/ the A4 once I get the intake and exhaust installed or would I have to upgrade to 3.42s?

Ok , Ive got a stock 94 3.4L camaro and the tires spin alot . Let me tell you this .... the 3.4L camaro has really good take off speed !!! But once your get around 70 Mph the car starts to slow down. Im putting Headers , exhaust , Cold air induction , and 160 degree thermostat. Im guess my car will be alot faster now and my top end will be alittle better . And just like camaro5sport said..... you better watch what your doing in the 3.4L because in the rain it is very dangerous and you can easily spin the tires in the rain or spin out . So WATCH OUT !!! Other than that ill think you will love the 3.4L , just put some minor mods on it and youll be eating civics , grand am SE's , integra Ls's , and Non turbo eclipses for lunch!!!!

3.4L.........good launch (low end torque)........slow over 4500rpm (lack of horseypower)

When I put the B&B on.....it did make a difference, as did the CAI.

But any rpm's over 4500rpm is "empty"......no go.

I won't be going over 60 much anyway, I just want low end. I only asked because I don't want to blow 3K on a car that can't even chirp. Does it have enough torque to chirp second w/ a transGo kit?

It has 200 lbs of torque , and from a stop the tires will chirp if you floor it. And you will have plenty of low end power . The car takes off really quick!!

Cool

With intake, exhaust, posi rear, and 3.23's I could chirp 2nd in my A4 occasionally.Get a 3" cat-back,not just the muffler to go along with the intake and it will make a world of difference in that "dead zone" that everyone is talking about.I had a used SS exhaust on mine. The 3.4 is plenty fast down low,it's higher up that it starts to show it's lack of displacemnet. My old car felt almost as strong as my LS1 off the line.Three must do mods for the 3.4 (after a tune-up of course)are:
-Intake
-Exhaust
-Posi Rear
Then you can do a lot of other things for free that will help in little ways.I think you will be perfectly happy with the 3.4,plus the gas mileage is GREAT!
