Resonator?

Hey people, I was just looking in Hot Rod Magazine and the mentioned a new v6 Flowmaster Cat-back system, so I was just looking at it online. They say it comes with a resonator. Can someone please tell me what this is? It goes before the muffled but after the cat right? Thanks guys.

Resonators are used to replace mufflers, you either have one or the other...I think anyway

American Thunder had a resonator to cancel out certain sounds AND a muffler, so it said...(I can't find that particular one now)...

the loudmouth is a resonator IN PLACE of muffler (basically),

The American Thunder for a v6, cat back system comes with a resonator that sits on the intermediate pipe before it clears the axle, and then feeds into the muffler. The resonator is to engeneer the sound and cancel out certain sounds to provide a lower pitch sound. In my opinion i have not been at all pleased with the sound of an 80 series flowmaster muffler or the american thunder cat back on the v6s. The SLP take off sounds a hell of a lot better, and outflows the flowmaster by far.

Actually I was thinking the AT might not sound so good either. Because I have the 40 Delta Series, which is a regular 40 series (the mustang muffler ) but has an extra chamber (?) to deaden the sound some. And I don't like the hollow sound it has in mid-range rpms.

I was wondering what the loudmouth sounds like in mid to upper rpm range with Cai and lid? And do you have to turn your car off when going through a drive-thru for them to hear you???

sateliite98 speaks the truth, automatics are never as loud as manuals with the same set up because of the auto trannys clutch that takes it out of gear. In a manual you can wind out the gear and listen to the exhaust crackle and pop delightfuly or down shift early for the same effect.

So do you guys think that the American Thunder with the resonator would sound good on a 5-speed V6? When I called Flowmaster, the tech I talked to said these were specifically made for the '02 V6's. The part #is 17358 for the '02's. I know satellite98 said he doesn't think it would sound good, but since my car is standard I wonder if that could make a difference.

I dont believe that there is any sound difference between the m5 and the automatic.

i'm about to give up looking for a system for my v6 because one or two have bad mouthed every system available, so i guess they are crap?, the AMerican thunder and th edelbrock are the only that some people seem to be satisfied with bt now somebody hascalled it crap. how would the slp take off sound good, its not even designed for a v6, i've seen one and it sounds okay but its raspy above 2500.

A z28 takeoff sounds very nice on my 3.4L but that is a entire;ly different system, I know a few people put z28 exhasuts on 3.8Ls, not sure how they sounded, but v8 takeoffs usually soudn less hollow.

Great part is I found mine free

By the way for what its worth, I put a 40 series muffler on my car, soudned a little raspy I put on a resonator tip($15 at pepboys) I mainly got it jsut for the look, and it did cut down on the raspiness of exhasut note.

Please, DON"T listen to what I said about the American THunder.
Sorry, I was just thinking out loud. I've never heard it in real life, or even a clip of it. I do own the 40 Delta series which is a mellow version of 40 series. BUT the 80 series is a different animal, they're more aggresive than the 40 (check the chart on the FM website). And mine does not have the resonator, but I think an extra chamber (?), different thing.

I've heard more good things about American thunder and Edelbrock than negative...matter of fact I've hardly heard anything bad about them. THere was a "mixed feelings" post earlier, but that's really it.

I would like to hear the AT though.
