Question about V6 rearends...
Question about V6 rearends...
The rearends for f-bodies were all the same correct? My dad has a 2001 coupe, and I wanted to get him the slp takeoff posi, and just wanted to make sure it would fit. I might get 2, but for mine, I'd need 28 spline axels too

The rear ends are the "same" But the 8's have posi from the factory, and disc brakes. The 6's are limited slip, and the older versions are drum. Other than that, they are the same.

btw, posi and torsen are both types of limited slip differential. there are others...
you're right about the brakes though. but I think all the 97+ cars came with rear discs as well.
the rear end from the V8 should bolt up to the 2001 V6 with no/little extra work.

Hrrrm, I'm almost positive that the z's had posi, I'm not trying to start an argument, but where is the info on it?

Morb is right. No "posi" on 4th gens, any models. V8s had the Zexel Torsen limited-slip rear and some V6s had them optioned. Most didn't however and had open rears but can hook up a model out of a V8 with the reluctor ring and the correct gears. If you have 3.08 gears, you can't use them with the limited slip off a Z.
Look it up on the web...

if you have a v6 rear with 3.08 gearing then you have a Series 2 Carrier, if you have 3.23s or 3.42s (the other gearing that came stock on v6 fbodies) then you have a series 3 rear.
the y87 coded rear comes with LSD and the 3.42 gearing.

Good god, Like I said, I'm not too sure about the rearends in these cars. I was only going by what I happened to over hear in a bar somewhere. Mix the alcohol with listining in, and memories become fuzzy. Cut me some slack.
A "posi" is an old name for a limited slip differential. A center section that contains some sort of biased or geared assembly that forces both axles to turn with the application of power from the pinion to the ring gear. The Auburn is a cone type and not rebuildable, the Eaton uses clutch packs and is rebuilable (just like the stronger 8.5 inch 10 bolt and the 12 bolt), the latest version is the Torsen.
Someone is confusing a spool with a posi. A spool is a hub that locks both axles together but won't unlock when going around corners, and that has never been installed by the factory. Spool= great for the strip, bad for the street.

if you are going to the extent of puting a t/o lsd into your car, do the gears as well. swap out the 3.08's and put in 3.42's or 3.73's. both your dads car and yours are 28 spline, all 3rd and 4th gens are 28 spline 10 bolts and are interchangeable except the 3rd gens are like an inch narrower so a 4th gen rearend would have the wheels sticking outside the original location like 1/2" on neach side. in 98 the rear ends became standard w/ discs and are the same as what went into the v-8's gear packages just changed.
