No Compression???

My neighbor and I just replaced gaskets on most of my engine and put everything back together and it won't start. When trying, it has a constant semi-high pitch sound. And sometimes it backfires in the front and smoke comes up. It also sounds like something rattling in there. And right before or during the rattling there is a beep from the car I've never heard before. My neighbor says that it keeps turning over like there's no compression.

Any ideas? I can give more detail later if needed.

Re: No Compression???

The book says to turn it 1 and a half turns, but there's no compression because the valves aren't closing. And they all need to be right so they don't clank. What do I do? I'm at TDC in # 1 position, which I was not at before, which was one problem. But there is still the question of compression.

Re: No Compression???

Problem solved. The Chilton/Haynes manual is WRONG. 1 and a half turns leaves no compression. We had a compression tester and learned what to do from there. Now we put it all back, and it runs good. Except oil is still leaking, which is why we did all of this to begin with. But he thinks it's because not enough sealer was put on that intake gasket. We're gonna take it apart and put it back together for the THIRD time later today. Hopefully we can fix that gasket and be done with it.
