New Old Dead 86 Camaro 2.8L

Hey all, new to the forums but bare with me please

I bought an 86 Camaro about a week ago from a guy who says that he thought the engine had thrown a rod. Brought it home to figure out the battery has also gone on it. First intensions were to swap a v8 into this baby since its dead but I figured heck why not try to get the v6 running. So we hooked it up to my dads car and tried to turn it over.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, a thrown rod would sound like some metal hitting metal fairly hard and making a louder noise then just a clicking or ticking, it would also be coming from the bottom of the block would it not?

When we attempted to fire her up, it turns over good and easy, I haven't checked for spark yet but I hear a light ticking coming from what seems the passenger side top of the engine. Assuming their is spark, what would be causing it not to fire up and causing the ticking?

Thanks!

It is prolly a collapsed lifter from sitting for so long. Make sure the engine has plenty of oil in it, and check for fuel pressure and spark.

Well the story from his was that he used to drive it around, let the wife drive it once and she blew it up. He thought it was a rod so he was goign to swap the engines out, then he had 3 little girls, not ime left for the car. So there was something other then for sitting too long. I am going to get a spark checker today and can check it out when I get home, it has oil in it but it needs an oil change, if i can get it running I will do it, otherwise I'm not spnding the money on it. Fuel pressure I could check when I take it into the shop if I do I guess, I don't have a pressure tester here so I can't do it.

Got spark, I would check for fuel but I dont want ti all over the garage and I dont have a prssure tester. A tip I was given is if I can rotate the belts/crankshaft pully about 60 degrees before it locks up or hits somethign and its harder to rotate, then I could very wlel have a broken timing belt, and guess what, I can do that so I think Ima take it in and get it fixed cause I can't be bothered to do it myself.
