y87 Camaro Muffler

Can anyone tell me is the y87 v6 camaros with the dual exit muffler used a v6 muffler with dual exits or a z28 muffler? I have a 2000 v6 and just want the looks of dual tips. Either way, where would be a good place to pick up such a muffler. Thanks.

Re: y87 Camaro Muffler

I thought about the same thing a few years back before I bought a Borla

I was tempted to just go to my regular mechanic and ask him to replace my stock one with a one in 2 out Y87 style and get Z28 tips.

Probibly wont cost much.

Re: y87 Camaro Muffler

My understanding is they are different. My y-87 '98 firebird sounded nothing like a Z or TA muffler when i gave it some rev's. I'm pretty sure the muffler used is unique to the standard 1-out and the z-28/ta mufflers. The appearance was very similar though.

It had similar tips to the 98/99 model T/As, but all the piping was smaller. I'm quite sure the Y87 camaros are the same.

I would suggest you just find a cheap 1-in-2-out muffler if you aren't too concerned with sound.

The Y87 muffler just had two outlets but the piping was the same as any other Camaro (2 1/4").

Of course the sound doesn't sound like a Z28...it doesn't have a V8 in it. You can take the muffler off a Z28 and slap it on a V6 but it won't sound very good.

If you just want the look of duals, you can just get a dual-out muffler. It will sound like pure ***...but you'll have the look. I suggest you spend some extra $$$ and get a larger I-pipe as well and pair it with an intake or it will sound like crap.

And before anyone jumps on me about how their car sound just fine with just a muffler...trust me, line up next to another V6 with an intake and larger I-pipe and it will put you to shame.

Re: y87 Camaro Muffler

Sure, iv'e heard peopel with a z-28 muffler on their v-6. Naturalyl it sounded nothing like it would on a V-8...but it's not too hard to tell it's the z-28 muffler on a 6-vylinder engine.

Also the Z-28s don't have 2 1/4" stock, they ahve 2 3/4" - that was my other point is that hte V-6 comes with smaller piping which is a clear indication that it's not the same muffler.

When I said 2 1/4, I meant the V6 Camaros.

Re: y87 Camaro Muffler

Muffilers on the V6 can vary, I've heard 3.8's that sounded awful! Mine with the Borla sounds pretty good now after it burned in.
I routinely have camaro and mustang owners asking me if it's a Z28 without the badges, it sounds great up untill the higher RPM's then you can tell it's a V6.

I tried the TA muffler off a 02 on mine and I had such a hard time finding someone to match it up to the 2 1/4 piping I gave up.

i'd just get a replacement 2 1/4 size muffiler and hope it's not super loud.

I have a Y87 RS and have to admit I love the tone of the engine...I was going to keep the muffler, get headers, highflow cat, larger I-Pipe and exhaust tips on mine so I would keep roughly the same kind of sound but a bit louder... and gain power...

Why would you bother with a hi-flow cat and a larger I-pipe if you are gonna keep the same crappy 2 1/4" muffler?

Check out the Magnaflow 3" LT1 catback....sounds pretty good on a 3800.
