Exclamation Need Help! Bud's car broke

My friend Chris has a 95 Ford Taurus w/ 3.0 V6, automatic. He is having some problems. He said his cat is messed up, making a rattling sound.

Well tonight, he car took a poo He can only go ~30 MPH when he floored it, and his SES light came on and off during the ride.

I am guessing it's a misfire, but can anyone give some suggestions? Thanks

I'd say almost for sure its the cat. My Cougar XR-7 acted the same way,you could creep up to speed w/mine(not as bad). But you'd floor it and just blahh, completely no power, almost suspended if you will.Got advise, found about cat, changed it ,all gone back to normal still is! 4.6L dohc btw
