Big difference in sound between muffler-only and a 3" setup, which is why yours sounds good. I can only go by what I've heard first-hand and that Magnaflow didn't sound too hot. Then again, the guy was bone-stock and was revving it like crazy.
Personally, I'm selling my Borla to a friend and getting an American Thunder system.

I've heard a bunch of modded V6's, but, IMO none of them sounded like a V8.
Your average Joe Doe might think it is a V8, but I don't think any person with some automotive knowledge/experience would mix those two sounds.
What ever you decide to do: good luck!

i am just happy when people say my exhaust sounds nice. i guess it sounds like a modded V6 though and still not an 8
If really want to sound like a V8 in all rpm ranges your gonna have to go for an exhaust that sounds like a stock 8 cyl. A hooker catback will do a decent job, but it wont be un godly loud at all, but it will have a rumble to it like an 8. Other than that if you want 8 cyl noise you need an 8 cyl. The reason i say this is because listen to a borla on a 6 and listen to one on an 8. There is a definant difference in the sound level. A 6 just cant pump out as much air as an 8.

you're not going to get a sound equal to a V8 with a V6 period
the complete exhaust system is different (larger) not to metion the engine. like said above a 3.8L can only move 66% of the air that a 5.7L can. you can get good systems that can make a 3.8 sound great at low rpm's but there still going to sound weak and high pitched next to anything over 5L so don't dissapoint yourself, just leave it stock like me. IMO the stock set-up doesn't sound bad anyway. atleast it's quiet and doesn't vibrate the car. I have the Y87 BTW

I think the 3.8L is kinda helpless..
But on a 3.4L a flowmaster with resonator tips sounded decent but hte best sounding exhasut(besides non, actually sounds good jsut too loud) is a stock lt1 catback.
2.75 in. I-pipe and stock muffler, I have a high flow cat tha might affect it too, sounds mean but tame at the same time.

2000 SS Camaro exhaust
I bought my 93 Camaro 3.4ltr A4 from Sonya4 on this board. She installed (I do believe) a factory cat back 2000 SS Camaro (LS1) exhaust (now that dang converter has mysteriously vanished) and it sounds real nice, maybe like it has a 5.0ltr under the hood, but nowhere near an LT1 or LS1 sound. But it sounds real good and looks nice, you can buy one of these cheap here when people swap to a higher performance cat back, and you can try it out at a price that you have not much to lose!

I have to agree, your V6 will never quite have the same growl as a V8. But you can at least make it sound good for a V6. My friend Adam just got done working on his 97 Camaro V6. Here's his setup:
- RK Sport Headers and y-pipe
- 2.75" Highflow cat
- 2.75" Intermediate Pipe from a V8 F-Body
- 3" Cut out (Usually kept capped)
- Hooker Muffler
- Borla Intercooled Tips (The dual, square, slash-cut kind)
All-in-all it sounds pretty damn mean for a V6. It was pretty expensive, but it was worth it to him. My fiance's going to do something similar to hers here in a few weeks. She's prolly going to use a gutted cat and flowmaster 80's though.

Sorry, but a V6 F-body sounds NOTHING like a V8 F-body(no matter whether 3.4/3.8).
I once had a 2000 3.8L Camaro with a 3" Borla cat-back and RKsport headers. Sounded good below 2,000rpm, but that was it. Even then, it still didn't sound anything like my 2000 Z28 with the same exhaust at any rpm(including idle).
I personally think the best sounding V6's are those that are quiet. As mentioned, a stock LT1 or LS1 cat-back will sound decent, flow better, and look better.
And for those who were told their V6's sounded like V8's, the person telling you this obviously hasn't heard a REAL V8.
Just like I'll admit LS1's don't sound as good as LT1's. Not flaming, just telling the way it is.
