Lt4 Vs. Ls1

Well i am really interested in the whole engine swap thing and i found good prices on both enignes and they are both complete engines. The LS1 is out of a 98 Corvette and obviously the LT4 is out of a 96 Corvette. So i just wanted some opinos on which route i should go. I Know this is spose to be in the V6 swap thread but i just wanted to post a poll and get some ideas. Thanks for your help.

9 times out of 10 its cheaper to buy the car witht eh engine already in it. You should sell your car for a 98 Z28. Your car is probably worth around $9k and you could get a similarly optioned 98 Z28 for about $11k.

BTW, some camaros have LT4s, very few though.

I'd agree. Just buy the car with the engine in already.

I'm going this weekend to look for a LS1. You should be able to find one reasonably priced. If so, I'll need to find some storage for one of my cars.

I need to update my sig.

Swapping out the motor will cost you an a$$load of money. You will also need to beef up or get a new tranny and other drive train componants not to mention an upgraded fuel system.

If you do, I would go with the LS1, cheaper in the long run because there are more of them so more parts.

I believe that it was a few 1997s that had LT4s.

I voted LT4, because I have a little against the LS1. My friends with them have all had more probles with them, then my 10 year old LT1. Plus I perfer an iron block.

Most problems with LS1's come from beating them.

I drive my LT1 like I stole it and she's never had major problems. I have had friends that burn oil like crazy and a few that have the pistons slap real bad.

Piston slap and oil burning are the only two I have heard of. No biggie, the piston slap is minor, and the amount of oil is usually none to half a quart. Theres no major problems like opti spark.

in the consumer reports it rates the 98+ camaros in the engine department to be almost perfect. My dad has an ls1 also and neither of us has had any sort of problem, the only problems i can see hapening often is maybe people racing and shifting from 3rd to second. That can be easily avoided by holding the shifter a in a better position.

LS1

IT is cheaper to buy a the car with the motor already in it for several reasons. Though I don't think beefing up the tranny is one of them. If I'm not mistaken the V6 and V8 Camaros automatic is the 4L60E, which is a 700R4 with an electronic valve body. That is also the same trans in my 95 Suburban. I'm sure there is prob a differance in the version between the one that goes in the truck and the one that goes in the Camaro, but i doubt there is 2 different versions for the Camaros.
