I have a 98 V6 Firebid and have a few questions.
First off I appologise if this is not the right forum to post this but I'm new, so yeah.
Here we go, I'm looking at doing some modifications for my 98 3.8 V6, I know for sure I'd like to do Dual Exhaust however be it as it my that true Dual is too expensive I'm looking at y-pipes. I'm wondering if any of you have sound files of what divverent pipes sounds like, such as Magnaflow, Corsa, and FlowMaster. I'd like to hear these before I spend the money on them. I'm looking for a deep throaty rumble, that kind of classic muscle car sound.
Secondly I'm thing about getting some type of intake hood, weather it be a ram air food from GM or something else. Do you have an suggestions.
I might add that I'm a college kid, so money is somewhat tight but I know I want to do something this stuff. For pipes I'm looking at spending not much more than say 550. 00.
Any help is greatly thanked.

Welcome aboard. You are in the right place. You may want to use the search feature of the board, it will help you to get more/better answers.
For your exhaust, you are going to have to make many decisions. If you want a deep, throaty rumble, you need to get two more cylinders on the end of the V6. You can get close, but nothing will ever make the car sound like a V8. But even getting close requires a cam. Headers back will get you well on your way, but that will probably run you over $550, and that is just the cost of parts. There are varied opinions on exhausts, so your best option is to try and hear the different setups out there. Many people like the flowmaster; I do not. The flowmaster gets "ricey" above 3000rpm to me. But then again I am partial to the "muscle car" sound like you mentioned.
I guess a little research will help you determine more specifically what you want and what you want to get yourself into, and then you can tell us and perhaps some more specific advice can be offered. Good luck!

A two inlet one outlet muffler would be the cheapest way, adding true duals isn't legal (in Cali. at least). The dynomax on my brothers 98 V6 Camaro sounds pretty good. I don't have any sound clips though. I put that on the car when it was mine, it was about $400 for the muffler nice chrome tips and installation.
The "intake hoods" don't add much (if any) hp. They are for appearance.

yeah I like in SD Cal. so I know that true dual is illegal, stupid smog laws.
I have been pointed into the direction of the Magnaflow twin y-pipes.
I realise that the car will never be as muscular sounding as a v8, but alas, I bough it used at a really killer price so I cannot complain to much. :-)
I was thinking I may go with some headers as well but again I really have no idea what type of sounds these things make. And Im very picky, anti-rice, if we must. Ive heard Flowmasters on trucks and was not impressed thus the bassis for my inquiries.
Thanks for the help, if any one else has anything to add please do so. Thanks
And I know that the "Ramair" hoods are mostly astetic, but well, it's a very muscular look.

For exhaust I would go Dynomax Super Turbo. Name sounds ricey but is probably one of the best sounding IMO. I have heard the Magnaflow one too many times in person cause my best friend has it on his and it sounds like crap. But he ditched it and got the Dynomax and it sounds a lot better. I used to have it on my 00 V6 but sold the car. On this new one it's going on in a couple of weeks. Cheap too. I say first get a CAI, whisper lid package instead of the hood. Same amount of gains I heard and cheaper. After you get that, then start saving money for the hood to get the look.
I bought my Borla cat back for $550 - It sounds good down low.
Depending what plates you install you can midify the sound some from loud to almost as quiet as stock.
Its good, Has a different type of sound that most people dont associate with a Camaro- but at times you can tell it's a V6
I would just get the wisper lid if you want an intake, IMO do the exhaust first, the Ram Air hood is only appearence and if your going to do that your best off geting some kind of Ground Effects because it'll look wierd with just the hood.
Welcome
Chris
