HP Question?
HP Question?
Hey guys,
I was just wondering home much horsepower my 94 3.4 camaro has. Also i was wondering what would be some ez mods to create enough HP to compete with the 3.8's. My car is a 5 speed with a K&N airfilter. Other than that its all stock. And i was also wondering why when i want to put my car in reverse i have to shift to fifth then down to reverse. If you dont do that it grinds and wont go in. Is that the same for all 3.4's or is it just my car.

Re: HP Question?
you have 160 HP stock, the filter isnt helping you much either, if you had a cold air intake and a K&N filter it would be better, an after market catback exhaust system would help as well.
how much money are you looking to spend, also practice your shifting thats probably the easiest way to catch up to another car... just make yourself a better driver
if im not mistaken the deal with your trans is that its syncronized... but take that with a grain of salt, i dont know diddily about manual trans' im an automatic enthusiast
and welcome to the land of the 60 degree V6

Re: HP Question?
a cat back can be found used really cheap ( i got mine for 25$ IIRC), or yo ucan go all out and get something like a borla catback for around 400ish (i think)
same thing with CAI's , i got mine used for 50$ , but new they are around 200ish
or you could make your own CAI out of PVC and an air filter (but it will be ugly, i used to have one , it cost me less than 20 $ to make)
as for plugs and wires, plugs are between 1 and 5 $ , i dont reccomend platinum, but other people swear by them. ive had good luck with AC delco rapid fires, but they are on the expensive side
wires can be found at autozone for under 30 i believe, and you can get a set of big ones online for around 50$

Re: HP Question?
To answer the reverse question. EVERY manual on the planet will do that. Its because the reverse gear ISNT synchronized. So when you push in the clutch, the gears are still spinning nearly the same speed as before you pushed in the clutch. Now when you put it into 1st-5th, the synchronizers slow the gears so they mesh without grinding. Since reverse doesnt have that, you either have to push the clutch and wait for the gears to stop which could take a 5 or 6 seconds, or just put into any of the forward gears that the syncronizers slow the gears down and then you can put it into reverse.
Synchronizers also the reason that you dont grind when you shift like normal. before synchros, you had to double clutch and match the engine and tranny speeds yourself to keep the gears from grinding.
Hope that helps.

Re: HP Question?
You will hear ricers use the term dubble clutching. They most likely don't know what they are taking about. These are the same guys that don't know what a timing light is.
There haven't been any production cars made with a dubble clutch transmissions sence any of us have been alive.
And when you do grind going form like 2 to 3 during normal driving it is because you synchros are going form shifting to hard.
With my little piece of sh*t I drive over here I can nail 1st to 2nd to 3rd with out taking the gas petal off the floor. No it's not good for the car what so ever.
