How do I change the fuel filter

I have a 1997 Camaro Convertible and i'm not sure if the previous owner ever changed the fuel filter. I got gas today and figured out that I was getting 15.2 mpg I already seafoamed..added some to the gas and crankcase and it didn't help much. The 02 sensors were also changed so now i'm gonna try the fuel filter then plugs and wires. How do I go about changing the fuel filter. Is is located near the rear passenger side wheel? I heard that I just need to take off the gas cap the night before, find the fuel filter, pull the lines, get soaked with gas and put on the new filter. Is there anything I am missing and where exactly is located?

Right next to the rear driver side wheel. Pretty self explanatory when you see it. Before you do it, open your gastank cap so it's depresurrized.

You also have to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. I'm not sure about the 3.8, but with the 3.4 and LT1 there is a schrader valve that you have to depress to release the pressure. If you don't do this, when you disconnect the fuel line from the filter, it will spray all over the place instead of just drip out.

I didn't see any schrader valve on my 3.8 but I just opened my gas cap let the preasure out, put the cap back on and changed the filter and I didn't have any problem with alot of gas coming out...just about half a glass of gas came out

Must be nice. I just did the Z28's filter yesterday. What a bitch that was. The valve is all the way underneath the cowl, so that sucks. Then when i disconnected the fuel line, the gas just kept on comin the whole time.

I just checked my Haynes manual and it only mentions the valve for the LT1 and the 3.4.

the fuel filter is less than $10 @ wal-mart, and we (3.8's) do have a schrader valve in the passenger side of the fuel rail.

Opening the gas tank relieves the pressure. I've done my about 3 times and not much spilled.

Opening the gas tank relieves the pressure in the fuel tank, yes. In the fuel system as a whole, not completely.

Screw the valve, the gas tank relives all the pressure you need to releive. If you do it right, with a catch pan you should not spill any gas on the ground. Unlike the instaluniversity site, something went terible wrong with that fuel filter change out.
