Unhappy High idle issues

First off i have a 1991 Chevy Camaro v6 3.1 with 170,000 miles on it and when i start the car it sits at 1000rpms and then it goes up to around 1500 and 2000 and then i hit the accel and it goes back down to 1000rpm's and usually sits there after that.. got any ideas or is the engine getting old and i should look into a new v6 or v8?

Is the weather getting cold where you are?? Maybe that could have something to do wit it, I don't know otherwise. EGR, fuel filter?

could be as simple as your IAC (idle air control) valve, located on the throttle body somewhere, not sure on a 3.1. get a haynes book and look in there.
