Help! ran out of coolant, car died

Ok, first i live in Alabama, and its been unseasonably HOT the past 2 weeks.
So im driving my 3.4 V6 to work, and it just suddenly dies on me in the middle of the road.

I look at temp guage, it has been slightly higher than normal lately (understandable with the heat lately). Typically, it sits at the 25% notch, but when the car died, i looked and it was at the 50% notch.

I get out and check the coolant, almost empty!

Is this what caused the car to die on me? If i just refill the coolant should i be ok?

i know its not the battery (new) and guage looks good on it still. What do you guys think?

Im praying since the temp was only at the half way mark that i didnt do any serious damage, if it IS just the coolant, and i top it off and get her going should i be fine if i just keep that up from now on? or is there something else i should check now that this has happened?

I don't have anything good to add but, if you had no coolant the temp gauge can't read the temp of the coolant it won't work with air.

Well if it was almost out of coolant, your gauge should have pegged and the check gauges light would come on.

So you found out the hard way your temp sensor for the gauge is bad.

It also possible that you blew the head gaskets and thats why it won't start.

Check your oil and see if it looks like a milkshake.
