Help a noob

Hey guys. I just have a couple of questions:
1. I'd like to get a new exaust, but I don't know which sounds best on a '99 3800 II.
2. Which exaust has the best balance of improved gas efficiency and increase in hp, and how much hp can I expect to gain?
3. same questions as #2 in regards to a chip.
4. Are K&N filters all they're hyped up to be?
Thanks for the help.

I don't know what gains you'll get from exhaust. I'd like to know that answer myself. You will want a catback system for sure. Cheapest is Flowmaster American Thunder. I cant tell you that you will get a lot more gains if you get headers in addition to a catback.

SLP cold air intakes are best for your engine, I'm told.

1) "Sounds best" is subjective. Only way is to get out and hear them first hand.

2) Any increase in fuel economy would be negligible. Your HP gains would depend on various variables about your car.

3) If you don't know these basics, don't mess with a chip now.

4) Sure, if you take them for what they are. They are a replacement filter and nothing more. Do not expect to feel any sort of gain.

Please resist the noob urge to post twenty questions in the next two days, since these questions have already been asked and answered. I can tell by your post that you have little knowledge, so I suggest doing a search on any questions you have. You'll find your answer and learn some extra stuff as well.

If you need recommendations, give the specifics about your car and your ultimate goal for your car.

Good luck.

importkiller and i will go nuts if we see 15 new threads made in the next day... i know i cant take that right now, i think i'll have a hernia if i do

couple of things..

CAI is a great idea, try to get one used, they last a long long time
exhaust is good, i'd say think about doing a highflow cat, if you can, to maximize the effect, i cant remember if 99's have logs or the better exhaust manifolds... if they're logs, think about headers (if u have the $$$ only)...

there is a debate about getting 2.5", 2.75", or 3" exhaust, i have a 3" and love it, maybe you wouldn't? do a search, and read up on it...

other than that, i'd say go with a cheaper exhaust, TSP rumbler, flowmaster, magnaflow, hooker, anything thats going to make u happy without making you poor... i think they all have similar sound characteristics, nice down low, crap up top, but thats life with a v6

best of luck (and do some searches, there's a wealth of knowledge here, use it)
