engine conversion
I love camaros and have wanted an F body since I was 10. On my 16th birthday my dream came true and I got a 2002 V6. I love the car, but now it is a year later and looks don't interest me like they used to. I need speed as well. I am wanting to change my car from a V6 to a V8. I know the practical thing would be to sell the car and go buy on older model V8. However, I don't have the money to pay the insurance on a V8 so I'm probably not going to report the change in engines to insurance. And 2 I have already spent a large sum of money on audio equipment (DVD player, componet sets, subs, amp). I was wondering if anyone could answer a very important question for me. I need to know what parts I will need to convert my car form a flashy V6 to a true headturning V8 LS1. I know the basics and my friend is a car expert on doing the work. But, all we could determine we would need is Engine, Transmission, Wiring harness, Computer, Engine mounts, Engine harness, Fuel tank, Front Springs (obviously the V8 is heavier). I'm not so sure about what else I would need maybe exhaust, fuel injector, and throttle body, If you know anything about what parts I would need or can put me in contact with someone who would I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to look for a wrecked LS1 camaro or firebird and buy the whole car. Then transplant EVERYTHING that is engine and drivetrain related...that means rear-end, PCM, mounts, sensors, harness, cooling system.....it'll be a lot of work, but will give you a great deal of experience with cars. You had better learn some patience before even attempting this.
One suggestion I have, since the f-body is a unibody platform, is to find a rear-impact totalled LS1 and buy it. You can just drop the engine and tranny out with the k-member (6 bolts hold this assembly to the car, 3 in each fenderwell) and bolt it up into your car. From there you swith the rear drivetrain in, hookup all the computer related stuff, and go get that baby aligned.
If I can find the link about removing the engine/trans from the bottom, I'll post it in here later on. HTH

There is also a complete write-up somewhere on the net. I printed it out (2 pages) but forgot where it came from.

hey thanks man, I had considered that but my parents wouldn't be too thrilled about me buying another car. what my dad wants is for me to buy the parts new that way they warrantied or something. i can't explain his reasoning behind it but when he says something i follow. catch my drift. so if anyone knows the exact parts i would need please post them or e-mail them to me at seabass04@aol.com thanks for trying caddie
i am buying new parts, but the prices aren't bad. its a long story about how dad made friends with a guy named brad. anyhow brad ended up in the auto biz and can get me parts at retailer cost. and brad doesn't know what parts differ from the V8 to the V6 but he can get them once we find out what we need. thanks for the help i really appricate it.
This is not "Advanced Tech" and would better be addressed on the V6 Tech forum. Or possibly on LS1 Tech.
I don't know the details, but on the LT1's, there were endless differences between the V6 and the V8. Does your V6 have a posi rear axle? Does it have disc brakes in the rear. I think they did away with the 2-piece/bearing supported driveshaft in the V6??? If not, that's another piece to contend with. I think the K-members are different, too.
Then, beside the obvious issue of insurance - since you will have misled your insurance company, it is possible they can weasle out of or reduce your coverage in the event on an accident - you may also have emissions issues. Do you have to undergo any sort of emissions check where they hook up to your PCM? How are you going to address the mismatch between the VIN and what is in the PCM (LS1_Edit??)?
In my opinion, what you plan to do is borderline ridiculous.... even at "retailer cost", you will pay at least twice as much for the new parts as you would have if you just bought a whole new car, then add in the labor and you will have spent three times what the car will be worth.... and there will only be a very limited warranty on the individual parts you bought, not on the entire car, which will now have a totally voided warranty.... but its your $$$$ and your car.
Just post it on the correct forum....
