Electrical problems, car alarm related..

Ok, here's the deal. I just got my '95 V6, and the previous owner had a problem with his car alarm. From what I heard, which might not be totally accurate, when he got into the car, the car alarm went off, even with the key in the ignition. It wouldn't turn off, and he couldn't start the car. So he calls a mechanic, or AAA or someone, and they "rip" the entire alarm system out of the car. About a week later, he goes to use the keyless entry remote, and it doesn't work. So he takes it to the local auto parts store, gets a new battery, and trys again. ZAAAAAP. The remote still doesn't work, the radio now resets its self (time, station, etc) every time the car is turned off / started, and the dome light no longer works.

Ok, here's my question. First of all, I don't know too terribly much about Camaros, but did they actually come stock with car alarms? And if yes, would I be able to go get a car alarm from a '95 Camaro and put that in, and do you think that'll fix the problem? Or is my car completely fudged? Thanks in advance.

-- Also, sorry about putting this in Engine Related, but this is the only place I could think of thats actually "Related" to the problem. --

I would just pull the lower dash panels and look at the wiring, you would probably be able to identify which wires were either cut r spliced because there should be some tape or something around the wires, I would check for bare wires, cut wires, and just clean everything up. as far as the keyless entry not working maybe who ever installed the alarm tapped into the wires for the factory keyless system and it just needs to be reconnected.

Do you have any general areas I should look for that? Or just take it all off and thoroughly search?

Alright, since its a 95 there probably isn't a body control module. Chevy started throwing that in in '96. Your Keyless entry receiver is going to be to the right of the passenger's foot space. You have to remove the kick panel and it should be sitting in its snug little holder. That's where I would start trouble-shooting. The Haynes repair manual has a pretty good diagram of how that module is wired. As far as a stock alarm, I think chevy had those stock in 95. I got a dash top off of a 95 and it has a little red light for the alarm. It sat to the right of the top vent on the dash. I'd say, if you have the little red light, then you have/had the stock alarm system. I'm not sure where the guts of the alarm system are though (my car is a base coupe). most of the wiring between the receiver and the doors is run BEHIND the dash. It would be a pain to get to it. Now if you go to the other kick panel on the driver's side there should be some wires coming out of it. They go to a pretty big block that you can only access by taking the two panels off from under the steering column. If someone were to splice into the wiring they would likely do it here. I have some pictures I could send if you're interested. Best to email me for them. Anyway, hope I helped.

here's a link to some pictures of my car's dash wiring. (I just rewired the entire thing) If you go to the second page, the second and third pictures kind of show where the wiring is run behind the dash and vents. Its kind of fallen down on mine over the column area. For pictures of where the harness connects to the block under the column you'd have to email.

That is truly incredible what you did with that wiring. I dont think I would of had the patience to do that. Anyway, gonna **** you off for the long post, but I figured out the problem: bad fuses. Everything is fully functional now. It was quite a relief, anyway: (if you haven't finished it yet), gl with finishing that 'maro off, and enjoy driving it!

LOL... don't worry about it. I was killing time at work. I'm really glad it was just a fuse. The wiring for these cars can be really mind boggling if you aren't prepared to spend a week ripping apart everything and staring at wires. Have fun cruising. -Monty
