does a broken catylitic converter slow you down

you fellas i ran my y87 firebird 2 weeks ago against my buddies 99 3.0 v6 gtz galant. im stock exept 4 a flowmaster catback and the galant has intake and exhaust we both had 3 ppl in our cars and i had my t tops off and i had a busted cat that kept rattling. he got a new motor put in his car after he blew the 1st one up. i used to smoke him by at least 3 cars from a stop but the both times i ran him a couple weeks ago i had 2 cars on him till 70 and he came back and grabbed me by a car length??? it was pretty embarrasing but o well i thought it was prolly my cat and cause i had my tops off. just this past week i got a new cat, new spark plugs an oil change and a new fuel filter and my car sounds deeper and feels like it has more pep to it so do u guys think this is wut slowed me down and do u all think i can take him now? any replies would be appreciated thanks

absolutely. my car right now has a messed up cat (rattles and stinks), and i have dead spots through the RPM's and its just overall slower, gas mileage blows, etc. im waitin on my magnaflow hi-flow to get here.

put a new high flow cat on, then race him again.

Please dont gut it take it from me. Buy a hi-flow cat. Also yes it will slow you down alot because its obstructing the exhaust flow.

When I gutted mine it echoed the sound does a straight pipe get rid of that and make it sound like there is a converter on?

A straight pipe will sound different than a gutted cat, or a functional cat.

If you don't want to deal with buying a new cat, just weld a straight pipe in there, and weld the cat shields onto it. That way you will pass a mirror test if they ever checked.

Re: does a broken catylitic converter slow you down

I just got back from picking my car up, i had my high flow welded in today. It does sound louder (not what i wanted), and raspyer. I dont know if it has to burn in like mufflers do, but at least the car runs better now.

I paid $40 shipped for a brand new Magnaflow cat, and $40 for the old cat to be taken off, the extention pipes, the reducers, install, and welding. $80 total for the cat and labor.

Check the dealer guys...

before they "check your car out" ask if your exhaust is still covered under warranty.

I BELIEVE, all emissions components on a "factory exhasut car" ae covered for 7 years 70,000 miles. So if you have a stock exhaust and less then 7 years 70k miles they will replace it free.

My car was 4 years old, and had like 38k on it out of the warranty but I got the factory cat replaced for free...

MAKE SURE, its the cat because if you take it in they will say there is a $80 diagnostic fee, they will check out your car, and if they find its the cat(your SES will go off get it check at autozone to make sure its the cat) then they will replace it for free and not charge you the $80 diagnostic fee either.

Thats assuming you have a stock exhaust.

Because i was quoted $40 for the old removal of the cat, the parts for the new one, welding, and install of the new one. Thats cheap enough.

I dont work on my car if its that cheap. Ive been working on cars for way too long to deal with stupid exhaust ****, because in exhaust, nothing EVER lines up and goes in easy.
