Crank car but engine is locked (hangs) until about 10th try.
Ok there's definitely some starting problem with my car. It's done this before but not as bad as today. It's a 1994 3.4L V6 Camaro with 170K miles.
Today after work in the parking lot I go to crank my car and the starter engages strongly, but it's like the engine was locked. I tried over and over to crank the car and the starter engages very hard and the car shakes but the engine seemed locked, it would not budge. I tried about 10 times and it finally broke loose. Then I had a bunch of THICK white smoke and a rough idle for about 1/4 mile.
A few times before, when cranking the car a couple months back, the engine would roll over once or twice and then hang. It did that again this evening after getting home when I went to recrank it after about 10 minutes of sitting. It rolled over twice, hung up and I kept the key turned, and it then rolled over and started. And again, a ton of thick white smoke.
After 10 minutes of idling and reving, whatever was sucked into the engine was burned off and all of the smoke goes away. This happened to me about a month and a half ago, and I haven't had any issues of this or the smoke since...until today after work when the engine just seemed locked.
I have a brand new battery that I just put in about a month ago, so that's not the problem. The starter was trying very hard to turn the car over today after work.
I replaced the plugs and wires with AC delco Rapid fires about 2 months ago, changed the oil, filter and fuel filter not even 3 weeks ago. We checked the oil this evening and it's clean with no water(not milky) or anything in it.
I don't know if this is some vacuum problem or what. It's almost like there's some suction that is keeping the engine from rolling over and something is getting sucked inside and then burning. It almost smells like burned brake fluid and it's very THICK white smoke.
If any of you have any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
Brian

I think smoke problem is not related to unability of starter to crank a motor. It seems to me your starter are at the end of it's life.
