connecting rod

I have a question and need a quick answer. I am having my crankshaft replaced 2002 3.8 and the mechanic told me i needed a connecting rod for cylinder #2 anyway I ordered the part through GM and my mechanic is saying the rods do not look the same and the one I got from GM weighs 170 grams more than the one in my car. This is the only rod GM offers . I had to give them the vin # just to be sure I got the right one. My question is if I put this GM rod in my car that weighs more than the existing rod am I going to have a problem? thanks

yes and no. 170 grams is a lot. I doubt you would feel it but if u can fix it or get it closer i would. being a stock engine or not i would get it closer. If the balance pads are thick enough do you think you could grind it and get there or not. That seems like a lot. Did u measure your self or going off mechanics. sounds like the weight of a piston pin.

I did not measure it myself although my mechanic is a good friend of mine and my family I trust him but I thought he was maybe reading the grammage wrong . are you saying that may be the weight of the rod + pin in the new GM rod ? I m getting the #s off the motor.. thinking maybe it was replaced before I bought it. I got it used from a Chevy dealer and I called them and they did not replace motor but maybe previous owner did.. Idk.. but it's driving me nuts I haven't had my car in 5 weeks !!!!!!!! Maybe if it is the right rod could it be installed and then have the motor rebalanced??

it just sounded like he measured the rod only on one and the rod and pin on the other one. Pins weigh about 170 grams. Just wanted to make sure everything was weighed and not just a spec sheet that says it weighs so much.

If its the right rod to balance it they measure the big and little end and grind the balance pads on the ends of the rod to make it weigh the same. The piston pin has to weigh the same also or use the old pin. If you can grind the rod the same weight on both ends as the old rod you would not have to rebalance the engine. Most machine shops could easily do that for you if your mechanic could not. Hope it all goes well.
