Check Engine Light

i've got my check engine light on and its been running really rich so i went to get it scanned and spit out the codes 172 and 175 and the computer said it was running rich too. has anyone else had these codes before? if so, what'd you do to fix them cause the mechanics were saying it could be a lot of stuff. They said start with the 2 O2 sensors, one before and one after the cat. is this correct?

Re: Check Engine Light

What kind of car do you have?

BTW, this doesn't belong in advanced tech. Assuming you have a Camaro or Firebird, General F-Body Tech & Info is probably the right place.

Re: Check Engine Light

Trouble codes don't realy qualify as "Advanced Tech". This should have been posted on the "V6 Tech" forum. I'll move it there for you.

Might want to add a "signature" with basic info about your car like year, model, engine, tranny, major mods, etc. That helps people answer your questions.

P0172 = System too rich, Bank 1
P0175 = System too rich, Bank 2

Re: Check Engine Light

You said your engine has been running really rich, and that the computer says it's running rich. So why would you suspect the O2 sensors, which are confirming something you already know?

Do you have any major mods that are causing it to run rich? If so, you probably need to get your engine computer tuned to work with these mods.

Re: Check Engine Light

i have a cold air intake, new flowmaster exhaust, and a new cat. the scanner thing was showing that at least one of the 02 sensors wasn't working proporly. so i'm still guessing i should replace those? and with those mods, the engine might need a tune to compansate for them?

No, your mods won't throw it off that bad. Yes, it could be a lot of stuff. Maybe the injectors are stuck open???

Re: Check Engine Light

the performance of the engine has been perfect. the light came on about a week ago and i had it scanned today. the computer showed that one of the o2 sensors was not going up to about 1 volt and back down to almost 0 volts. and the other o2 sensor was doing that. he also mentioned the MAF?
