Can't even get off my road..Snow Question

Well a huge snowstorm hit the northeast as some of you may know. While all the main roads are perfectly plowed, my road which is less than 1/2 mile is only slightly plowed with a sheet of ice covering the road with loose snow on top.

I tried to get off my road but thought in the conditions I could not make it up an incline to the main road. So I turned back in someone's driveway. Going straight the car just freaking slid right to the side of the road and I got stuck. Took half an hour to get it out. SUV's just cruising on by me

Well, I simply have to get out of this road today, and it is a little better. I know I should be putting some weight in the back of my car to make this a bit better.

How much weight should I be putting in the back of my car, and should it be on the back seats or in the rear t-top trunk well. Sorry If I sound a bit dumb, but I am only 19 and this is my first RWD crappy snow experience

when i used to think that it helped i had almost 300 Lbs of sand now after driving the car in the snow for 4 years (this will be my 5th winter with her ) ive decided that it dosent make much of a diff at all, you just have to learn to drive it in the snow

I here ya dude, I'm 19 too. My parents let me borrow their Tahoe friday and saturday but sunday I was on my own and had a heck of a time geting back up my hill (the slush all froze)

They still havent plowed it again so I drove the tahoe today also.

What I have found, is the second I get stuck I imeediately put it in reverse and try to accelerate as slow as possible, rocking forwards and back has goten me out before, dont floor it or really get on it.

Sometimes if I get hung up I'll hold in the parking brake button and pull it up slowly as I accelerate slowly, it sometimes slows the spinning wheel and gets traction to the other (manual traction control)

Weight and snow tires are the way to go, I dont have either, but it will only do so much, it's a RWD car with 4" of ground clearence.

just think of the sunny days profiling and looking good in your camaro, it'll make it feel a little better.

dont'rock' the car by shifting quickly from reverse to drive, or you will blow out your gears like i did on my 60,000 mile tranny

if you think it will help pull ahead a bit, then foot on the brake holding the car put in reverse and repeat, if you are too agressive your drive or reverse will go boom soon

oops

I recently damaged my car due to slipping and sliding in the snow. Are cars suck in the snow. The only thing you can do is go slow and go easy on the gas when you start off. I've been commuting 22 miles each way to work for about 4 years sometimes in the snow and ice. First time hurting the old car though. 22 miles at 30 mph is a long drive. It makes me think that I should have bought a front wheel drive car or a truck. But... I would miss the 'RO.

Real winter tires will help a lot. Bridgestone Blizzaks are popular, there are many others. The real deals have a sidewall marking, I think it's a snowflake and a mountain.

You need 4. It doesn't help much to go if you can't turn or stop.

is one place to look.
