Hi,

A friend of mine has a 1998 Firebird (Series II 3800 engine). She just had her radiator replaced after 125K miles. It had a bunch of crap like sludge and rust in it. A mechanic told her she may have to replace the engine block because rust from the radiator could be clogging the passages through the engine. Does this sound right to anyone? Anyone else have this problem?? Can it be flushed out?

It won't clog up the engine passages like that, there big compaired to a radiator passages.
It still can collect in the passages. You use oxycilic acid to eat out the rust.
A cars cooling system is the least taken care of part of most cars.
I think replacing the block is a load of crap.

 

Yea, no need to replace the block.....have her take it to a different mechanic, and have the entire cooling system flushed. Most places will charge between $50 and $75 for this service. If you want, you can also flush the system yourself.

i've done a back flush a couple of times on my oldsmobile. its an 89, with 190K miles on it, its also the 3800v6. the last one i did was just last week, and i saw little to no red colored water coming out, which to me makes it seem like there is little rust in there. get the back flush kit from the local parts store, its like 6bucks or something.
