4.3l Vortec

Hey all, got a serious problem going on right now with my Blazer. I have a 96 Blazer i just had to repo from a guy, well when i picked it up I found that theree was over 15 quarts of water and oil in the engine. No wonder he didn't want to pay for it any more. I have had a similar problem before with a Ranger of mine, but I caught that rather quickly, the Blazer will not start at all now.

I am treating this as blown head gaskets. I know I need to get a compression tester this week to check the cylinders, but what other "simple" tests could I do to narrow it down? I am going to have the heads crack checked while they are off, I am willing to bet that atleast on is cracked.

Hey any help you guys can give me would be helpful. Gotta get this thing running so I can sell it. Thanks again.

Stryker

PS...Hey can any one tell me what the standard compression is on one of the motors, I am assuming between 120-130lbs, it has been so long since I did anything "mechanical"!

Re: 4.3l Vortec

my 3.8L engine had a compression of 185-195 psi

is the oil yogurt looking? that would definately indicate coolant
in the oil.

dam wish I had a 4.3L vortec-head engine, even if it had a busted head gasket, thats easy to fix

Re: 4.3l Vortec

head gaskets are not uncommon, but a more (extremely) common problem is the intake gaskets leaking coolant into the lifter valley

Re: 4.3l Vortec

you know, after getting it apart this was the thought that I had, the heads looked alright, but I wasn't sure. So better safe than soory, took it all apart and going to get it back up and going next weekend. Of course I am going to take the heads in to get crack checked just in case, but they look suprisingly good. Worst part about the whole thing is all the damn wires. Man I cant get over how many wires there are under that hood!
