I would go look for a cheap 3.8 They are much better. Either way it wont be bad. I had a 95 3.4 it was good off the line but it pretty much falls on its face. Then I had a 97 3.8 and it was a 5 speed which was quite a bit faster than the 3.4 A4. I was quicker all the way through the gears. The 3.8 would be your best chioce.</font>
Yeah, I'd try to look for a 3.8. My brother has a 97 A4 Camaro vert, and when I drive it, I can feel that it has much more grunt than my car. It feels the same down low, but around ~2800, I feel the car really pull.

I also get bad mileage. I get around 17-18 with mostly highway and some city.

Don't count on the car chirping second gear, my car with 308lb-ft of torque at the wheels won't bark second every time, but its running 2.73 gears. If its slick out, or your tires are "broken in" then you will be able to.

Put on a set of tires that are not known for there grip and you wil break them loose.

i chirp second nealy every time with 235s tires, 3.42s + 5-speed, and LSD.

YOu have nice tires that hook. Cheapest way to get your tires to chirp is buy crapy tires.

Hell i used to spin second when i had my open diff, and a donut on it I am sure that wasn't safe, but fun.

Our '97 3.8 A4 Firebird ran great although it did not chirp the 245/50-16 tires at all!

Re: Is the 3.4 really that slow?

3.4's are the mac daddy of v6's lol. but really, they are a blast to drive and will spin the tires like nobody's buisness. my 3.4 w/ over 200,000 miles will still bark the tires at 37 mph when i down shift into 2nd from 3rd. hell when its wet outside i have to be careful cuz the car will fishtail or become loose in the turn. pretty fun though b/c i learned how to control the car a lot better than i would have b/4.
