yeha i was a little surprised to see james posting...
\opening up the exhaust makes a difference on the 3.4L, I think I change exhaust setups every other week on my car, switching for high HP, less torque for the drag strip and more midrange and less high end power for autoXing.
But freeing up the stock system works, my CAt was recnetly clogged beyond belief so I gutted it for the time being, until I get the last a 2.75 in.-2.5in. reducer made up. And get a little more handy with an arc wleder, and I get my nex exhasut setup on the car.

I live 40 min from Memphis. It's workable. The price will have to be low though because I can get a wholesale price from a broker friend of mine.

All 3.4's came with 3.23's stock. If you want to swap them then I'd suggest 3.42's for an A4.Good luck.Kevin
I would go look for a cheap 3.8 They are much better. Either way it wont be bad. I had a 95 3.4 it was good off the line but it pretty much falls on its face. Then I had a 97 3.8 and it was a 5 speed which was quite a bit faster than the 3.4 A4. I was quicker all the way through the gears. The 3.8 would be your best chioce.

There's a link that'll give you a good idea of how they work/where they are located. With the 3.4 your 2 sensors can easily be found. If you have faulty O2 sensors your gas mileage will suffer due to the inability of your PCM to measure rich/lean conditions.
