3.4 with 215 horse?

Just browsing through some cars and I came across a 96 Monte Carlo Z34 with a 3.4 L v6 engine. It says it has 215 horse power. Is this the same engine with some upgrades found in the firebird and camaro until 1995-96? If so, what the hell did they do to it to give it almost 60 more HP than what f-body's got?

DUal overhead cams, different heads, intake manifold, a wonderfully weak timing belt, huge oil consumption, goes through alternators like crazy, which is hard to replace since they are on the bottom of the motor.

My dad has a 94 GTP with a DOHC 3.4L.

Very well maintained its entire life my aunt had it before us, but now it has about 50,000 miles on its 3rd alternator($500-600 repair at a shop) and eats a quart of oil every, oil change.

For a daily driver lik 99.98% of v6 f-bodies are, I wouldn't want that motor in there, for the cost and R&R for the swap I woudl do a v8, 4.3L, or jsut build the hell out of a 3.4L.

Ahhh, thank you very much. That pretty much explains it all. I thought they would be the same engine but you learn something new everyday.

When the newer Montes came out in 95, the base had a 3.1 and the Z34 had a 3.4 liter. They were not 215hp from the factory. I had a 98 Z34 with a 3.8 liter and it was a lot quicker than a 3.4 liter. The 3.8 was rated at the same 200hp as the 3.8 in an Fbody. It is not the same motor as what was in the fbody, montes are front wheel drive.

Its that dual over head cam thats giving it the power. Look at the grand ams. They make more power, however slight to mildly agreesive driving causes those engines serious problems. Like the grand am always had a serious head cracking problem.
I sacrifice the hp to gain more reliabilty, especially on the higher millage cars.
