2.8 to 3.1 swap
2.8 to 3.1 swap
i have an 88 camaro with a multiport 2.8 L V6. from what i have read it is an almost direct swap with the newer 3.1 L V6. so to make a long story short i bought a full 3.1 L motor and i got my 2.8 out. It doesn't look like it's going to be easy. i have to move the battery and the fuel filter and a bunch of other stuff that i dont even know where it goes. i used to have a 92 V6 camaro but i cant remember where anything goes. if anyone has any pics of a 3.1 or any info on the swap please send it to me. i need to get this car running before the snow comes so i dont have to drive my SS.
thanks
thanks
You don't have to move you battery or any thing like that. You say you have all ready taken out the 2.8L so half the work is done all ready, all most.
Take that 3.1 and strip it down to a turn key swap motor and change over the TB, fuel rail ( the 3.1 and 2.8 injectors are the same), ignition, pulleys and make sure you add and remove any sencors as needed.

well the 2.8 TB doesnt fit on the 3.1 upper plentum. the 2.8 L fuel rail has a metal line comming from the side of it and going into the back of the lower plentum. the 3.1 doesnt have this line and it has a soft plug in the bottom plentum. what pulleys do i have to shange? whats differant about the ignition? any ideas what sensors i have to add/delete? how do i add a sensor?? by deleting it do i just leave it unpluged? I still need to use the MAF sensor right? use my stock wiring harness. stock motor mounts. stock tranny even tho the motor i got has the tranny atached.
what is the big differance between the 2 motors? just that the 3.1 is bored a little bigger?
really any info would help, please give me your $ .02
any1 have pics of the swap after its finnished?

You cant tell any difference in the 2.
that link keven 2.8 put up I posted in some of those.
the 3.1 is a stroked 2.8, the bores are the same.
Just swap the 2.8 stuff into the 3.1 block and put it into your car.
I'ts just a pain to pull the stuff off the 2.8 and put it on the replacement engine.

my V6 is unregerstered the inspecton is up next april, no insurance.
I here it runs great, I will have it on the road next july when I go back to the U.S.
I have been porting a pair of 2.8 heads, blocking off the EGR passage inside the heads by welding a 3/16'' peace of steel into the back of the center cylinder head exhaust port.
polishing the port and chamber sides of the valves.
The 3.4 intake is dug out about how I want it, has the turbo coolant taps installed.
The upper / lower plenum spacers are done.
The lower plenum is done I think.
The upper plenum is untouched.
I put an ajustable bbk fuel psi reg. on the fuel rail ( the 85-95 V8 TPI one, summit part # bbk-1714) that's one of the reasons I made the plenum spacers, I drilled the inlet on the fuel rail and fuel rail head out with a 7/16 drill bit.
I'm getting ready to try and make a LS1 to 2.8 TB adapter.
I have the k-700 valve springs, crane +.05 locks and some old a$$ Al retainers
