Who would win 1994 3000gt VR4 or 1998 Z28

A friend of a friend just got himself a 1994 VR4, and from what I hear he has been talking some shiat about camaros and trans-ams. His car has 130k miles but only 30k on the motor I'm at 44k miles. It looks like they do the 1/4 quickly but trap low, so I'm thinking my best bet would be from a roll, since they are awd? Is this the right thinking? He says it dynos 330 to the wheels. How big of a threat is this car to me? I have a g-tech but have never made an actual run yet. My mods are as follows:

suncoast creations ram-air hood
smooth bellow
Z06 MAF
flowmasters
1.5" drop

I think you will probably edge him out, though it will be close. People out there give AWD cars too much credit, thinking they can own the world.
BTW that's a sweet ride (Checked out your Car domain page)
Get some black stripes on that thing

since you didnt mention any mods on the 3000gt, they dont make 330awhp its around 325 crank hp, no you shouldnt have much of a problem there heavy and from a roll all that weight and awd kills them, but from a stop he will have you for the first 50mph or less

Actually the 94 Vr4 only comes with 300 hp stock. They didn't raise it to 320 until 97. I don't know how the guy knows he's got 330 rwhp unless he lives near one of the few awd dyno's in the country.

If the VR-4 is Stock, you should take him.

I've seen many VR-4's run, I wasnt too impressed. They launch well, but crap out up top.

From a roll. Definately not from 0-30. 1/8 mile the VR4 would probably still win with a hell of a launch. 1/4 mile it may be close with a great launch from the VR4.

If he's claiming 330 whp, he isn't stock. If it's just a replacement engine and he's stock, he's no faster than it was in 1994. 100 mph traps are just adaquate today and certainly not enough to beat an LS1.

I love being underestimated - after all, it's the bastard child of the import world. We all know they're heavy and have no top end. My car is almost all stock parts - stock cat-back, stock fuel pump, stock turbos. It turns consistant 12.50s and 108-109 mph. I think at 4070 lbs that isn't bad, and wait till the new turbos go on.

Cars that are dynoed and are turning the same slips I am usually make 330-350 at the wheels so if that guy does make that power, don't think it'll be such a pushover.

Timeslip, mod, pics in sig. And the increase to 320 hp was in 1994, along with the 6spd.

you would own his a**s.
even if he take at you at the launch, stay in hard, you would smoke his car 2 - 3 cars by the end of third. my brother has a 1999 ss and he has done it before. don't worry to much about vr-4's. they're not as fast as they look

'91-'93 had 300hp, '94+ had 320 due to a slight increase in boost. All '94 and up VR4s perform about the same.

If the VR4 is launched very aggressively it could pull a 13.5 or so - enough to beat a less-than-perfectly driven LS1 F-body.

On the steet from a dead stop, with less than perfect traction, this race could easily go to the VR4. From a slow roll the Z28 will destroy the VR4. This isn't a slam-dunk either way.

You're not doing anyone any favors by offering misleading advice. This guy posted here because he wants to know what he's up against. Saying "you will own his a**s" will induce a false sense of security and could end up costing him the race. I've owned both a '99 Z28 M6 and a '92 Stealth TT (the twin-under-the-skin to the VR4) and while the LS1 is definately much stronger at higher speeds, it could take the Camaro the entire 1/4 mile (or longer) to make up for the VR4's awesome AWD launch.

There are a lot of worn out VR4s out there that are easy pickin's for an LS1 F-body. Add this to the fact that many people aren't willing to launch the VR4 aggressively, and the tables certainly tilt in favor of the Camaro. However, a well-driven, well maintained VR4 evens things up a bit. Better safe than sorry.
