Supra vs. R1
Re: Supra vs. R1
Notice I don't disagree on the fact that you always see them running from a roll. Most owners seem to not be interested in learning how to drive them. There are some that do though. There's one in Atlanta with 1100ish whp and what appears to be stock wheels - until you look closer and see that they're widened and running 335's on the back. "Supra" and "sleeper" don't go together but that car is probably as close as you'll get with one.
Racing from a roll is a quick and obvious way to see who's got more power though. It removes everything from the equation except for power - no traction, no reaction time, not even much shifting.

Although I've never owned an Fbody, I've owned 4 Corvettes (as well as 2 strong Supra TT's) and I can tell you that in no way is the Supra easier to launch than the Vettes. Maybe a high stalled auto supra could compare, but the 6 spd Supras are a bear to launch. Your talking no power until 3k rpms, then tons of power. You've gotta slip the clutch out while keeping the rpms in that 3-4k rpm window...very tough. To much gas and you boil the tires, too little and you bog. While it can be done well, it's not nearly as easy as launching a torque monster v8. I've made probably 200 passes with Supras and Vettes. On street tires I've never gotten better than a 2.1 60' with the Supra. With the Vettes I was averaging 1.8's. I had a 94 vette that made 450 rwhp and a 95 Supra TT (both 6 spds) that made 443 rwhp. During the same summer, the vette averaged 12.3's @119 while the best I could get out of the Supra was 13 flat @114. Both with street tires of course. Keep in mind that this is coming from one of the biggest Supra fanatics there is. I was one of the first 25 members of MKIV.com way back in late 97 and used to troll this site all the time to stir up sh*t. Now it's my fav forum

I've got no experience with the autos, but there were a lot of guys on MKIV getting 11's with em on stock turbos, so I know they're much easier to launch.
