SRT-4 in the hands of a real driver

Most of you are familar with the SRT-4 and most of you respect it for what it is (its still a neon but at least it has some *****)

Well most havent been THAT impressive clicking off high 13's with mods

Well over the weekend I had a chance to witness a good friend of mine drive his SRT-4 with less than $500 into it (minus the slicks) at the track

We all knew it would be quick as he has taken down some machinery at the midnight drags but WOW

12.80@104 @3000ft 1.7 60'

If you have been on the SRT forums the only guys in the 12's usaully have larger turbo's and intercoolers etc...

Now driving ability is a good thing and probably the deciding factor in this case but I was skeptical as to how good these neons would be when they were released......in the hands of a FWD veteran these things can be downright nasty

He is approaching the 300fwtq barrier and managed to out 60' a chevelle with a high stall, 4.10's and 320wtq

Not a "kill" persay but just wanted to share for the SRT-4 owners on the board who may be thinking about having to buy a huge turbo to run 12's.....they are not needed, stock seems enough to pull EVO's and STI's like nothing

Cool.

What's in the $500 worth of mods.

What color was it? Was it at firebird on saturday? I saw a green one go 12.9 something but I don't know if it was the same one. I was rather impressed.

This "real" driver went 13.9@101, stock on stock tires. I'm not out of the ordinary.

That's not "that" impressive. With slicks and a simular 60ft, the car should go 13.5s easy STOCK. I've just never heard of anyone driving one stock with slicks.

With some fairly simple mods (being that it's a FI car) it should be pretty easy to get in the 12s...

Let us know when he snags 10s/11s and what it took to get him there (if he decides to go that far with the car).

Nonetheless, nice time! No doubt he can drive better than most of the other SRT drivers I've seen.

14.1-.3s out of a bov/i/e/bc SRT on street tires at a sea level track in good weather is the norm around here...

It was a black neon, as far as I know they don’t make green SRT-4’s and I didn’t see any green neons there.

Did you get a chance to make a full pass in your Z….would you mind sharing your times with the board?

Did you see the Z06 run? Or the Black SS from base with slicks and LT’s?

The mods he has done is exhaust and a few secret mods (most DSM guys could probably figure it out) stock airbox with a drop-in K&N….the exhaust was the most $$$

As far as driving skills, he took the neon to an SCCA event the next day, swapped some kumo viv racers and ran the third fastest time of the day…..the cars who beat him were on slicks…power band is crazy with a small turbo and 2.4L….lots of low end response for SCCA

Okay, I guess it was black, it looked dark green from where I was. I didn't see it really well. I saw it from the parking area close to the tech inspection area. My best time I got is the one in my sig.

I certainly believe it. A few rags got 103mph out of them, which is enough for a 13.7. I've heard of guys running that too, but haven't run that number personally.

So far though, [mcdonalds]I'm lovin' it.[/mcdonalds].

There is a board member at srtforums that just ran a 11.99 ao atco on Sunday. While he is not stock(upgraded turbo, injectors, fuel management, exhaust)it does show the potential of this motor.

Potential of the motor AND the light weight car that the little engine has to pull.
