need help on an outcome

so my friend just bet me 50 bucks that his 1987 iroc-z would beat me. he bought it about 3 or 4 months ago, for 3k. the guy who sold it to him said it was "built for racing". i took a loook underneath, and it looks like an l98.
it has a loud-as-hell exhaust, and possibly some sort of intake. i saw no forced induction, and even though the exhaust was loud, i couldnt hear what would sound like an after-market camshaft. my only consern is that it's an engine swap, and i just can't tell. if that's not the case, how badly will i beat him, if at all?

my car is a 2002 z28. the airbox lid has the gm performance parts logo on it... im not sure if that really means anything. and i'll probably take out the air filter for this one. other than that i'm bone stock.

thank you for your imput.

If he's your friend, just ask him to let you take it for a spin. I imagine you'll know right away if he can compete.

Re: need help on an outcome

To me, if the engine really was decently built, the car's sales price would have to be over $3k just to get some of the investment back. They'd have to add around 150hp to a standard IROC to outrun an 02 LS1. Maybe I'm wrong and that's doable with a run-of-the-mill warmed over 350 but somehow I doubt it.

Is the guy familiar with fast cars or is this his first one? Frame of reference is key when someone thinks their new ride is "da bomb".

I don't think you have a whole lot to worry about...
