Mustangs are slow!

Cruising on highway, leisurely 75mph in 6th. Unknown car behind me, reasonable following distance. Nobody in front. Two lanes, I'm in the left. On the right, up ahead, is a semi doing 60. A Mustang GT (pre-05, but I don't know my years very well) is coming down an on ramp, set to merge right next to me.

The Mustang accelerates, obviously trying to get in front of me before I pass the semi. I drop it to 4th gear and get into it, not even full throttle, to about 90. The Mustang can almost keep up. He falls in behind me, following closely. Evidently, he thinks it's a close race. Then again, he probably doesn't know I could have grabbed 3rd at that speed. We get caught up in traffic and slow back down to 75. So, when traffic clears, I decide to show him what 3rd gear is like in an M6 LS1. I drop the hammer and walk away. Shifted to 4th at redline and ran it up to 110 or so before letting her coast back down to 75 and watching the Mustang do a ricer flyby.

My wife was in the car, cheering me on.

Was he trying to race you at this point. If you went up to 110 and back down to 75, I'd assume he was just crusing down the highway. You say nothing about him nailing it on the second run after getting clear of traffic. Not trying to offend but if he was racin Good Kill.

Re: Mustangs are slow!

Will it never end with the stupid "go race a newer cobra" when someone races a mustang? It is so old and EVERYONE knows the capability of the 03/04's... and it always seems like your the one saying it Antz...

Re: Mustangs are slow!

Okay, you bunch of doubters.

1. No ****, a Cobra would have given me trouble.

2. This was older than the '03-04 generation. I don't know when the generations begin and end, but I know that a '96 has the same body style. Could have been a 5.0, could have been a 4.6. It was dark. I'm assuming it was a GT.

3. It was way too fast for a V6 of that generation. I have no idea if he was auto or stick. I'm betting he was stock, since I couldn't hear his exhaust.

4. I assume he was racing. I did not see the driver, speak with him, or anything like that, so I can't really be sure.

Way to kill a good story, guys.

Heh, yeah, I'm grateful. She loves driving her Grand National, and we have plans to get it into the low 12's.

It should already be in the 12's!!!
Put some tires on that thing already. You've got enough mph to run 12.6-12.8's in a GN, but you need to leave on boost.

I did the same last week. I had a 96 4.6 GT on my right. He was prolly waiting for me to try something. I didn't even give him the chance!! Droped into 3rd from 65 mph roll and walked away from him like he was going backwards!!!

I don't race From 4th anymore, unless I can't use 3rd. Especially from a 60-70 roll. I've roasted a couple cars on my way to work like that...

Pass 'em like they're goin BACKWARDS!!!!!

Nice kill!!

Re: Mustangs are slow!

thats a weak kill for a ls1...i mean the 93-97 lt1 camaros can whoop on 98-04 mustangs, possibly 05 too, mustangs are junk unless you go intot he 03-04 cobras then theres some power

Re: Mustangs are slow!

narly dude what are you talking about??
first of all. 94-98 was one body style of mustangs. being 94-95 were 5.0's and 96-98 gt's were the 4.6. which had the ****ty heads which are probally comparalbl to a stock 305 tune port lol. so other words. dog slow.
then the 99-04 came out with pi heads on them from the factory with 260hp and 302lbs tq.
those cars and lt1's are like dead even races. usally the win actually going to the mustang due to the weight and gearing. both run low 14's to high 13's stock.
period.
