The Mach vs 01 C5

Guys,
A lot of you guys know me and know that Ive owned many an F- body and Stang alike. I love both and will always give an impartial view of both sides.
This afternoon I got a chance to see what my Mach 1 would do against a buddys Vette. We have been talking a while to basically see where my Mach stood against the LS1. His is a M6 with cat back and K&N only while my only mods are in the sig. Well the scene opens up on hwy 74 as we met around 2pm at the local gas station to plan it out. No smack talk as he is a good friend and knows we both have fast cars. We take off to an old (damn near abandoned) back road that is over 2 miles long, and warm the street tires from a stop. We took off and we both spin with me pulling a whole car length out of the hole and holding between a car and a half car length (back and forth through the shifts) until we reach 105-110 and he just pulls real hard on me....lol
We pull over and talk and the first thing he said was "Damn man" " I thought I was never gonna catch you"
I know he was being moddest as if the wheel spin wouldnt have happened he would have done much better. We decide to come back the other way and scratch it off from a 30 mph roll. Much to my suprise on the third honk we were dead even for just a second and then I pulled on him a fender!!!! I kept this up until again 105-110 mph.
Again he starts to ramp on me and you can see the aerodynamics and hp at work in the beast (Vette).

So with out further delay I will give you my assesment of the LS1 vs Mach 1 debate.

Machers if you have the gears like me (4.30s) without them it wouldnt be near as good a run. Take the big 350 out early and not try to race top end.
If you can race them in the 1/8th mile do so (I like the odds). If you go 1/4 mile then it will still be neck and neck , but it could go either way.

Now Sunday 12/12/04 we are planning a track visit on the street tires so we can get some real time numbers to report.....Stay tuned for the results.

Later all.
Mike

You mean, the big 346. Nice runs. I lost by 1 car to a Mach with a Borla Cat back as its only mod a couple months ago at the strip. I got a so-so launch on him with the DRs (3 cars ahead) and he pulled me slowly the whole way down the strip. I may have another run coming with a chick driving a Mach with a catback. I will tell the story if it happens.

Nice runs man, it sounds like you both have strong cars.

Steve Y-

You been on this board forever and I STILL see no 1/4-mile time in your sig. What's up?

Good runs. Racing a vette is always fun. It is one of my favorite cars to run.

I ran a 14.0 at 101 before the DRs, 3.73s, and plenum. I don't care enough to drive 85 miles each way to get 4000' times or 130 miles each way to get sea level times, when I have a great grudge racing track only 40 miles each way down the road.

Re: The Mach vs 01 C5

Ok...

Just got back from the track and good gawd it was cold out there...brrrrr
My buddy took his C5 and we headed out earlier today. On the way up there we ran into a flock of Uncle bens ricers that kept pace with us trying to get a rise out of us, but we just drove the speed limmit cause the last thing I needed was to get a ticket going to the track today.

Well we get there and the place is damn near deserted. The track officials said that they would stay open throughout winter if the weather would cooperate. We let them cool off 20 minutes or so while a few drag cars flew down the track.

Time come to stage em up and we cleaned the rocks off the street tires.
First time up my bud got the jump on off the light and held the lead crossing the traps...only thing was I ran an 8.36 @ 84.5 mph with a 1.92 60' time and he crossed at a 8.78 @ 84.2 mph with a 2.14 60' time

Our mph is almost mirror image.

Next run I dump the clutch a lil too high and spin like crazy and let out of it so I let out and cruised through the traps at honda civic pace of 10.43 @ 68 mph...lol
On that run my bud achieved a much better et and run an 8.41 @ 83.8 mph.
We were planning to run again , but some bozo in a 5 second terror spilt tranny fluid all the way down the 1/8th mile. The guy came over the loud speaker and said that the track would be down at least 45 minutes or longer so we were cold and ready anyhow.

So all in all I had a better ET than my buddy , but he actually crossed the finish line both times before me and that really is what counts.

Another friend was trying to get me to put the stickies on and make one more pass, but I declined. I left thinking though...could I actually hit 7s with just a cat back, gears and slicks? hmmmm

Sounds like a strong running car Mikie. Like all the Ford guys say, don't fear the gear! Seems like that's one of the best mods you can do for one of those cars.

Gears made my car a lot harder to launch even on DRs. I have to launch at 3000 rpm or below, now. I used to launch at 3500+ rpm.

Hey, did you get my PM?

Good runs!
How are you getting such a good 60' time with street tires on a cold track with those gears? If you bang 2nd hard, don't you spin badly, too?

Help me out here. Some guys on this board still think my car runs 14s. Tell them what yours ran with mods.

Re: The Mach vs 01 C5

John,
Thanks a bunch man. I am so glad I went 4.30s because the car loves every rpm now. Other than throwing on a pro chamber h- pipe and a cold air kit Im not gonna mod this one into race car (unstreetable status) like I did my LS1.

The gears were worth every penny though. They picked me up a solid 3 tenths on street tires.

Hows the Z doing these days?
Its good to hear from ya bro.

Steve,
I have always cut good 60' times in all of my Stangs of the streeties. The 01 GT was cutting 1.98-2.09 60's bone stock.
My technique was just stage at idle and when the next to last yellow lit up I rolled out. Now when I say roll out, I mean do not raise the rpms above 1,500 and once you start rolling (about two feet out) lay down on the gas.
This way I have always done better than dumping the clutch higher in the rpm range.

As for 2nd gear spin I do , but its more like a series of hard chirps...maybe a little wheel hop also. Still I come out of it with excellent 60' times. I drop my air pressure down to 19 psi on the street tires.
Now my F bods were different and they would spin like the wind and I never could manage a 1.99 on street tires.

To comment on my 01 GT (Casper)
It ran a 13.93 bone stock a few years ago.
I put 4.10s, x pipe, k&n, flows, and pulleys on it and the car went 8.68@ 81 mph 1/8th and 13.44 @ 103 mph at Darlington Dragway in 2002. Now you gotta take into account Im damn near sea level and your waaaay up in the atmosphere...

Now my 99 LS1 Z run 13.22 bone stock so I really miss it....lol
Damn Ive had about 1 dozen cars over the past 5 years . Pathetic isnt it

Yea I got your PM. I don't put much faith into those calculators like you showed me. I know some of them work, but I'd rather see it with my own eyes. I'm a visual learner

Sounds like it's running well enough that you won't need to go crazy on the mods.

The Z is still broke, but I'll be getting busy with it soon. I'll be graduating December 18th, so after that I'll have a lot more money to play with. I've been looking at some options for the bottom end in more detail lately since that's where I want to start. The car is getting a rebuild, more portwork on the heads, better valvetrain, maybe a forged bottom end if the funds allow and a trans rebuild. I was also thinking about a tubular K-member, some new shocks/struts and some stiffer springs. Basically since I'm not using the car right now it can sit while I accumulate the money and time to get it done right. So after the first of next year I'll be in the garage getting greasy on a regular basis

I dont think anyone really cares what your car runs, your just easy pickins and everyone has fun w/ you. Your car still does run 14's cause you havent ran anything better yet...Mikie cuts good 60's cause he can actually drive.
