Raced a 88 GT
I'm cruising along and this dude is tailgating me, and i'm like wtf?! So I switch lanes and he slowly pulls away... i'm like wtf?
So I follow him just cruising along. Then my friend in the passenger seat said, he thinks its the kid from class. He says he's taken plenty of Trans Ams and Camaros (4th Gens) and i'm like no way dude, you're freakin crazy.
Anyway, so I chase him down and I pull up next to him and we start 60 and he got the break and I started in 4th because I didn't think it was worth the 3rd gear downshift. It took me like 3-4 seconds but I reeled him in slowly and went to like 115.
Did it again, and started in 3rd... totally different story. **** pulls damn hard!!
I don't even like racing... but that was fun. Mustang guys, well most... really are ignorant.
And you wouldn't believe how many kids in class think my car runs mid to high 14's. I mean, they don't know about the cam, they think its stock... L0L But even a stock LT1 is in the low low 14's high 13's.

Glad to see you put that slow stang in it place.My friend just got a 1989 mustang and wants to race me when he gets it running right.I'm going to show him what the lt1 can do.He said he couldn't beat me but he wanted to see how his car does.

Fox body Stangs are good for cheap speed and easy modibility. Other than that, their junk, like every other Ford product from the 80's and early 90's. Don't even get me started on the interior.

Well, most F Body owners I know aren't ignorant, just cocky.
Fox Bodies running low 14's? Sorry, I never heard that. Modding them to go fast, oh hell yea I know about all that. Believe me I know, don't try and educate me.

Imagine that...this subject comes up again. It is my opinion that a lot of you folks are basing your conclusions on personal bias/hope rather than hard data. You're welcome to accuse me of the same, but I have no stake in this fight other than to provide insight into what was actually going on back then - both on the street and on the track - as I was driving/racing quite a bit during the time period in question (we had a 85 Z28 LB9 and an 88 LX Coupe at the time).
There is no doubt that a good-running L98 Z28 or Formula is a good run for a 5.0 Mustang - especially those that are not driven to their potential. All L98s were 'stab-n-steer' cars, so there wasn't much skill involved in getting a good ET out of them. There was far more room for driver error with a 5 Speed 5.0. A poorly driven Mustang was a high 14 to low 15 second car. A properly driven one was a low 14 to occasional high 13 second car. You can thus deduce that the "average" L98 pilot is going to be quicker than the "average" 5.0 driver - simply because of the skill required in getting the 5.0 down the track in an expediant manner. Throw in the lower-powered 305s (230 LB9 down to the lowly LG4) with the 5-speed tranny, and the same driver qualities required of the 5.0 become evident with the F-body, and thus the "average" typically shifts back in favor of the Mustang.
Further, and as has been pointed out, the quickest of the 5.0s (non-Cobra) were the low-option LX's, especially the notchbacks (I ordered my 88 notch w/o A/C, but with power windows, etc). That said, the difference in weight (between the different 5.0 body styles) was no where near as great as some have stated here. A low-option LX notch is probably 150-175 lbs lighter than a fully-optioned GT (not counting verts, of course). "Low option" LXs were pretty rare. A far more common comparison is an LX Hatch vs the GT, and difference in weight there (especially from 89 and on) was along the lines of 40-50 lbs.
I'd like to see some documentation of a 3rd Gen (non-TTA) running 13.9 in 100% bone stock form. Either back "in the day" or recently (though that becomes harder to verify). Please provide links. The quickest I have seen (in print, on the net, or in person) is 14.2 @ 98 mph. I have seen (in print, in person, and on the net) a best of 13.9 @ 98 mph for an 87 Mustang LX 5.0 (Magazine was Cars Illustrated, Spring 88 issue - for those old enough to have been around cars during that period).
