Killed a 1992 Supra by a car!
I don't have any personal experience with this, but from reading their forums, I think the Viper is the modern equivalent of the Supra. No, you can't add 600 horses to the base motor, but then again, it starts at 500 horses. The very fact that the Supra was over-engineered is what led to its downfall, at least according to typical magazine stories that I've read about the car. To whit, even at its high cost, Toyota lost money on every Supra they sold, precisely because the drivetrain was much higher strength parts than were needed for a 300 bhp car.
BTW, I certainly don't have any longevity information at this point, but my Z06 is at 540 rwhp with just the additition of long tubes and an S-Trim. Stock long block, stock trans, stock rear. I don't beat on the car, but hit it hard enough to tell you that I can blow off the PilotSport 2's in 3rd gear, going 70 mph on the Freeway, and then mashing the gas pedal. I haven't taken it to the track yet either, but guys who have the same combination have run 11s and 12s at 130 mph through the traps.

Oh. Nope, I seriously thought you meant bone stock engine and tranny.
Come on man....are you really asking me this? I think you missed what I was saying, I don't recall saying "without engine/tranny mods", I was saying "without spending 150k"! Glance back and you'll see.
However, I have seen a few cars hit 500rwhp+ with stock tranny's. I Have seen a couple 03-04 Cobra's as well as a couple blown LS1's. If I recall the guys on "Horsepower TV" did it a couple of years back with a 98' SS. I remember they Procharged it as well as full bolt on's. After they swapped out the tranny they tuned it and put out 541rwhp. Regardless of the tranny swap, the power was there. As far as reliability without the tranny swap.....who knows. But......my point is that 500rwhp can be done with 10-15k and and great reliability. That was my original point, not the whole "without engine/tranny mods". So my point is that with 15k you could get a new rearend as well as a great setup for 500rwhp, if shopped right!
*edit* - I don't remember the whole price minus the tranny for the 541rwhp setup, but I am sure with the tranny they stayed around 15k? And yella, just to help, you can use that multiple quote button, it always helps me!

That's cool to know. Most likely my next car will be an 02-04 Z06. I'm not going to be sc'ing it as it'll be a daily driver, but I've already got a NOS kit in the garage waiting for it. Nice to know it'll handle some power. However, I gotta think you're on borrowed time running 130 mph traps.
You're right on the Supra thing though. It definitely wasn't a money maker.

$6000 for the supercharger kit, including 60lb/hr injectors and fuel pump
$1200 for stainless long tubes
$650 for dyno tuning
$400 for wide band O2 and fuel pressure gauge
$250 for KB Boost-A-Pump
Edit: I installed all of these things in my garage in about 40 hours total time, so there's no cost for installation price. No normal tools on top of a metric socket and wrench set were needed other than 2' heavy duty 1/2" breaker bar and 2' pipe extension; those were needed for torquing the crank bolt.
That took me from about 350 rwhp (never dyno'd) to a dyno'd 540 rwhp SAE.
BTW, this is my daily driver. It's either this or a bone stock S-10 pickup. They get the same gas mileage; this car is a much faster and nicer drive, so it's no contest in my book.
As far as being on borrowed time, the general consensus is that the (stock) clutch is indeed on borrowed time, but the tranny and rear are fine as long as I don't run ET street slicks or similar. The pistons, however, really depend on having a consistently good tank of gas (remember, 91 octane) and a rich tune. The tuner knows this, being located in Irvine, Ca, so it's tuned rich. If it were leaned out or had 93 octane, it would be much closer to 600 rwhp.

I ran 10.8@130mph with a stock 302 block with 29k miles and t5 tranny in my saleen 10 years ago!!! I went as quick as 10.3@132 with the factory untouched shortblock but with a C4 auto tranny.
We put in a cam bolted, on some unported heads, intake and vortech S-trim and ran consistant 10's all day. Supras are'nt the only cars that can be made fast easily. The difference is that it takes most supras 800rwhp to run 10's while it took less than 500rwhp to run mid 10's with a stock block that was'nt even freshened before being made into a 10 second screamer.

92 supra ... third gens.. 7mgte... theyr pretty solid motors except for the all to common headgasket leak once thats taken care of theyr amazing engines and can be much fasster then the 4th gens due to power to weight... with the right cam, exhaust, and turbo...a camaro wont have chance... sorry fellow camaro owners.. i know not to mess with some of them... im thinkin bout buying one and selling the camaro then buyin a 95 nd up t/a
Welcome to last March...
Prices on third gen Supras are too high. People think they're somehow connected with TF&F movie and want $15k+ for a 20 year old example. Don't get me started on how the stupid drifting scene has make it certain that I'll never find a clean RWD Corolla GTS hatchback.
My brother has an 89 Supra NA (owned since 1994) with a bad bearing. I was wondering how that car would be with an LS1 under the hood. It'd sure be different than the usual 1JZ/2JZ swap and probably would cost the same. The car's interior is mint.
