Friday night battles
Friday night battles
This weekend was great. It has been ages since I got a great race from a stop so while checking the local boards I come across a racing meet for two nights of fun. I show up to the meeting knowing a few of my fellow racing friends are going, SRT-4 with exhaust 20+hp on the top end…great mod 250hp/260ftlbs dynojet, me with 175hp/131ftlbs and a few other guys I know who are no joke ie 900whp Supra.
So I arrive…nobody pays me any attention…love owning the Honduh…park…chat…roll to a local cruising spot and park in a row of 15 modified imports with a couple SRT’s thrown in.
The local rice (domestic and import) roll by revving but magically never stop to lock anything up…typical. We hang out for a little while and freeze (its probably 30* outside with 6-10mph winds) After the cruise is shut down by the police we exit the area in a long line of vehicles suspiciously doing the speed limit.
We drive what seems like forever to get to the spot. Its beautiful, out in the middle of nowhere and is newly paved.
I park and keep the car running, heater on. As I get up to the small crowd of racers I can hear the races being negotiated. While at the first meeting spot we had a guy with a Dodge R/T aka Eclipse say he just wanted to run some faster guys to see where he is before his Supercharger upgrade. So I tell the head instigater/organizer that I want to run the R/T for fun. He smiles and tells the kid to line his car up. I call for the right lane…I get the right lane. The pressure is on. I cant lose, so I am nervous about my first race in more than who knows how long. Will I spin? Will I bog? Will I break an axle? Do I have enough gas to get me back from the middle of nowhere?
Doesn’t matter as I am now rolling up to the flagger. I think about how cold it is and how small the tires are….195’s…snow tires…god this is gonna spin.
Rev to 6K and I dump….car lights up for a sec or two…I back-up to the line. Flagger has his hands up….I am focused on the drop….drop…bam I dump…screeeeeeeeeccccccching I am bouncing off the limiter like always at launch…hit 35 and I slam 2nd gear BAM….solid screech and surge….reving reving reving shift light full throttle shift BAM third gear…watching the revs climb shift light -- full throttle -- BAM….fourth….I shut it down around 105-110…I had won, but by how much?
I get back to the spot and get out and everyone is pretty joyful. When I ask by how much they just laugh “Dude, it wasn’t even close.” And a “Buslengths bro” While I knew I would win I was hoping to get a good ego boost for building the confidence up. I was successful and started aiming for larger targets….but they were no shows…namely a Blue STI I wanted to run from a stop…on snow tires…crazy, yes, but with a rookie 19yr old driving the STI, I wasn’t worried.
My next two runs went smooth and I beat a light weight CRX with a VTEC motor by a healthy margin which would have been larger had I gone into third smoother…third times a charm…after that I went up against a friends DSM from a roll…a slow, low mph roll with my torqueless wonder…we hit it and once I hit VTEC he never pulled but by then I was at his rear bumper…oh well, I had beaten him in the CRX and he wouldn’t go from a stop because his “clutch” was bad….so I understand and put myself at a disadvantage….our mutual friends commented on how I was out of VTEC from the get go but I didn’t care…its just for fun. So I win 2 and lose to a Turbo DSM not bad I think.
But the next night is even better….much better
