AWD Eclipse goes down
Re: AWD Eclipse goes down
Hey John. So now you're taking the LGT to a front mount a bigger turbo? What type of turbo? Are you planning on swapping out intake and all?
Also, I have to agree with John. My 95 Eclipse GST with a 16G, Bigger side mount IC, intake, and running 18 psi was running 13.8's on street tires. It's not as easy to drive and AWD car as everyone thinks. I consider myself at least a competent driver , if not better, so maybe these other cars are just not being driven to tehir potential. Just my .02,
Kyle

Also, his is a 1st gen Talon.
Re: AWD Eclipse goes down
My 92 AWD only ran 13.20s with a 16g but I also didn't have the rest of the mods to make the most of it. FWIW, the record for a 1st gen stock turbo is 11.6 @ 115 so indeed I wasn't close to maxing out the 16g. The 16g record is 11.39, also at 115.
As with any car, it isn't always about what you bolt on but what you do with it.
And trying not to totally hijack the thread, but yes, I'm going with a FMIC for my Legacy, and a FP Green hairdryer. With the other supporting mods (fuel system, exhaust) it'll run 11s and 120 mph for sure. Gotta love sleepers
I don't plan to touch the intake manifold or any internals. Sane boost levels should preserve engine life. At any rate, a 2.5 shortblock costs what a good clutch did in the Stealth! The Green spools nicely in a 2 liter DSM so with 2.5 liters behind it, it'll be a fine daily driver setup.

Re: AWD Eclipse goes down
good kill!! i ran 14.6@100 on 3 cyl (one plugs electrode was absolutely gone)in my stock turbo 90 laser @ 16psi. he probably had a team ripp tranny in it, those things are rock solid!! in that race he shoulda just reved to 45 and dumped it
his tranny woulda held but his rear end would have went into pieces. i learned to respect these little 4 bangers cuz they realy **** and get!!

Re: AWD Eclipse goes down
Jbird, I'm with you. My 16 G was not a huge improvement. It wasn't a ball bearing ported 16g or anything. Just a basic improvement for more topend over the stock hairdryer. Also, mine was front wheel and on street tires. I never could get traction once into boost. It was fun but I love my AWD on my LGT.
And John, I know about the costs with Stealths. If the engine blows on our cras, we're looking at, what, $2-$3K. Chump chage (j/k).

Re: AWD Eclipse goes down
Bone stock my 97 talon awd turbo got mid 15s.My 92 ran low 15s.
By bone stock mean bone stock boost. High 14s on 2nd gen cars are pretty easy with boost increase on stock turbo. Mid 14 to low 14s on 1st gen cars.
Lots of 14 b 1st gen cars can do 13s with few other supporting mods.
At local track auto awd turbo with small 16g which is not much of upgrade was running 13.8s last weekend.
Any awd with big fmic and good size bigger turbo and proper support should be easily low 13s or 12s.
11s are not that easy to get .That would take a big aftermarket usually ,big fmic, full supporting mods and that means better fuel pump, bigger injectors, tuning, intake and exhaust and possibly cams, intake manifold, this and that.
The 90 to 91 have the weaker 3 bolt rear ends. They went to better rear ends in mid 92 ..4 bolt much stronger.
I would have liked to run my 92 talon at track or against my other cars but have demodded it to stock level for sale and my new 97 is not operational yet building up a 2.4 engine for it and planning on very large turbo.
My 92 had a big 50 trim much bigger than a stock turbo but had stock clutch so couldn't get power to the ground and never did install intercooler that bought for the car and sold it as it don't fit my new 97.I had full supporting mods on my 92 though..big pump, big injectors,3 inch catback and downpipe,
tuning, cams but they were not installed,water/alco injection to install and big fmic and new high perf clutch which also never got installed.I have little doubt that my car would have hit low 12s or high 11s with the stuff that I had for it if would have put it all in there.
Your car sounds a bit similar to my current mods in my 96z and am very curious to see how my 96 would do against various modded dsms. A stock turbo 2g is not much threat. A stock turbo 1st gen should be close to my 96 currently. And again don't mean stock boost just stock turbo.
My 96 for comparison has 3.42 gears,2800 vig,air induction, airfoil,tb bybass, magnaflow catback, hypertech but tuning out,maf translator, asp underdrive balancer pulley. It ran a best of 14.3 at 95mph with a 2.18 60ft last year before pulley or stall on nittos.Bad traction conditions that day.
Our track was at 1900 feet which hurts times too. Turbo cars are affected less.
You do have nittos and they should help a lot against these awd cars as the awd cars can turn stupid low 60ft times and I usually destroy everything off the launch with my awd turbos. But my vert on nittos last year did beat a jeep multiple times off the line so they definitely can make a good difference.
Sold my set last year but buying another set shortly.
Our fourth gen cars are very impressive and respond pretty quickly to mods.
But I love my dsm cars they are huge fun and handle well and ride much better on our local lousy roads then my fourth gens. They also are great in bad weather and do well in winter.Go drive a dsm guys you will like them. The best year is 92 with 6 bolt motor and 4 bolt rear end.

I'm not sure of the boost, but low 20's sound right. Its stripped bare inside except racing seats. He ran it at the track but never finished, he blew the manual tranny up 1/2 down the track. I think he needs the !driver mod more than anything else. But still a car with alot of potential. I think I'd get him from a dig but from a roll I think I'd have my hands full.

Re: AWD Eclipse goes down
I took an auto 2nd gen out for a ride and tazzoed it..same as gtech and it couldn't get in the 15s on stock boost it was like mid 16s.The auto turbo cars are big pooches without a stall converter upgrade. Then they start to be a lot more respectable. Two step or stutterbox launch helps a lot on the turbo manual cars .It sure did in mine.

By just getting into the car I totally ruined the hp-to-weight ratio of my former Mirage turbo (2450 lbs). I'm the reason my Stealth weighed 4030-4070 lbs. Obviously I don't waste any time doing any weight reduction on my cars -- it'd be easier to remove it from me.

. My new car is a 92 talon tsi awd. Mods are Turbo back exhuast, K&N intake, clutch, cams, coilovers, rebuilt motor with arp studs, metal headgasket, and more stuff like that, stock turbo (14b), stock manifold (intake and exhaust), stock head, pistons, rods all that stuff, rebuilt tranny (not race built just has been built up with stronger synchros and such), front mount intercooler, running 14psi cause am on stock injectors and tuning. Car ran a 13.4@105 in So Cal. With upgraded turbo (like a 50 trim) should be good for really low 12's, high 11's on 91 pump gas. Not trying to stir anything up just giving my facts to my car.BiGGinZ
