98 cobra vs 94 z28

I was talking w/ my dads friend who has a 98 mustang cobra convertable with 15000 miles. We were talking about cars, and I asked him if he wanted to run. He said it would be a waste of my time. He siad his stang would just walk me from the get go I laughed, and he said he was serious. He told me his car was atleast 1000 lbs lighter, and had more horsepower. This guy knows a good amount about cars (mostly stangs) but Im just wanting to make sure there is something im not missing here. Im pretty sure I would take him. He is stock, and a convertable w/ 305 flywheel horsepower. Im pretty sure his car is heavier than mine too. I have all the mods in sig, and my cars runs great. No problems at all. I think stock it would be a good race, but im pretty sure I would walk him badly. Like I said before. Is there something im missing here, or is he just retarded?

Actually he has a 4.6L dohc rated at 305hp and 3??ftlbs. It will be close but you probably weigh the same since hes a vert. Hes stick because hes a cobra, what are you? Im assuming your auto with the tranny cooler.

You should actually beat him but dont race to far or he will do what LS1s do and start to walk away. Keep it under a 1/2 mile race.

His car will be a pig off the line trying to drag that extra convertible weight with it. You should have no problem. I do agree that once he gets moving it will be a better race, but still think you will put so much on him off the line that he wont push it that far. Just my opinion and you know what those are like

Thats what I was expecting. Ive raced some 99-04 gts, and they seem opposite of what the 98 cobra will do. They are about even at launch, then at higher speeds, I pull them pretty hard. Ive only raced 2. both were 5 spds w/ exhaust, intake. Also (sorry about the double post) I have a friend w/ a 94 3000gt vr4. He is a descent driver, and his car is stock. From what ive gathered, my car should be low 13s, and his mid to high 13s. We are gonna race soon, but not untill it gets a little warmer. What do you think the outcome of this race will be? (again, sorry for the double post)

You will walk that Vr4 as well. I had a friend that had one a few years ago and it was decently quick. Actually it ran an 8.90 flat in the 1/8th mile at 78 mph. Those are AWD and get off the line good. They also weigh a ton so thats where it kills em. Someone else a little more knowledgable on the Mitsu's can comment if they feel any different. I just call em like I HAVE seen em.

Let us know the outcome.

No I believe what he was saying is that the non-pi and pi setups are only sohc. Although the cobras did have better heads made for them in 99 they were not refered to as pi and non-pi.

With the work done to your car you shouldnt have to worry about stock vehicles with a blue oval but watch out for the 03/04s that whistle.

Sometimes I cringe when I read peoples responses. First lets address this 1000 lbs weight differential. So what does that mean? His car weighs 3400 and yours weighs 4400? That doesnt sound right. Maybe he means that your car weighs 3400 and his weighs 2400, maybe thats it. If he thinks there is a 1000lbs differance he might be the stupidest person no the earth. If anything his might weigh a little more. Cobras have either 3:07 or 3:27 gears I cant remember which, but either way they suck off the line. The hardtops ran mid 13s, he will be lucky to run a high 13 with the extra weight. Race him and race him for money. With your mods especially the longtubes and rockers you will rape him. Yea and do try and keep the race under a 1/2 mile...what a stupid statement. Where would you race for 1/2 a mile at an airport? Maybe at the 1/2 mile tracks they got these days. You will win any race that does not involve going to top speed, and that Cobra will not catch up anywhere near enough to make it a race, you should have him by about 3-4 cars.

That Cobra is probably a high 14 second car with a normal driver.

Unless their is something wrong with your car or you cannot drive or both, you should easily put 4-5 cars on him....stock.

The best I ever saw run was a guy with DR's, launched hard, drove hard and ran a 13.9@101 back in 98. I thought that was respectable.

But it was not a vert and he did drive well.
