Wheel Lugs w/ Draglite and stockers
Wheel Lugs w/ Draglite and stockers
So i just put my new draglights on the rear and have some questions. The first question is how far should the lugs stick out of the wheel? The tire shop supplied me with some cool lug nuts that worked but i just want to make sure. Also, if i went to longer studs will i still be able to put on the center caps to my salad shooters? Thanks!
NHRA rules require that the "lug engage the stud threads at least one diameter (of the stud) into the hex portion of the lug".... that means you need at least 1/2" of the threads engaged in the HEX of the lug. They don't have to stick out the end of the lug, but it has to be into the hex portion.
They will not give you any credit for the part of the threads that engages the shank portion of the lug that sticks down inside the hole in the wheel. A stock stud, at least in the front, will not be long enough for the "extra long shank mag-style" lugs used on the Draglites, with the typical 5/16" spacers.
I suspect the back might be a problem too, but I started with 2" studs in my 12-bolt, and had to go up to 3" studs.

Fred, thanks for that info. The lug nuts i am using are not hollow centers so you can't really see the studs. I guess i will try to pass tech with them and see what happens. I am only running 13's up here in Denver so maybe they won't be so stringent.
My biggest concern is being able to put the center caps back on my stock wheels, any ideas here?

No help at all on the stockers. My street wheels look like crap with the long studs. I ended up drilling out and threading the "closed end" lugs that came with the ZR1's in the front. In the back, I had 1/2" threads so I was able to find a closed-end "duplex" lug, which is twice as long as a normal lug, and drilled and threaded those as well:
